Jeremiah waved to get Eldonâs attention and called, âMinister, over here.â
Eldon crisscrossed his way through the maze of tables to get to theirs. He shook Jeremiahâs hand and caressed Cattâs. âHow are you doing today, Sister Cason?â
Catt plastered on a smile. âIâm great. I didnât know youâd be joining us.â
âItâs not a problem, is it?â asked Eldon before sitting down.
Catt shook her head. âOf course not, just wasnât expecting you, thatâs all.â
âMy being here is a pleasant surprise, I hope.â
Catt didnât reply but smiled politely.
Eldon picked up a menu. âSo, what are you two having?â
Catt skimmed the menu. âJust a Cobb salad for me. Iâm trying to watch my figure these days.â
Eldon gave her the once-over. âI donât know why. I think youâre perfect the way you are.â
She doubted that. âThank you, Eldon, but itâs more about being healthy than it is about trying to squeeze into a size two.â
âThe minister exercises quite often,â said Jeremiah. âMaybe the two of you ought to work out together.â
âI would love that,â Eldon chimed in. âWorking out is always more productive when you have a partner. Everything is.â
Catt caught the hint. âIâll keep that in mind, Eldon.â
âSweetheart, you ought to see some of the exciting things the minister is coming up with for our youth,â suggested Jeremiah after their orders had been taken and their plates brought out.
âI love kids. Itâs truly a labor of love,â said Eldon.
âYou definitely have a calling for it,â acknowledged Catt. âIâve seen the way you are with the children and the teens. Youâre going to make a great dad.â
âIâm sure he will. A great husband too,â declared Jeremiah, cracking open his snow crabs.
Catt cut her eyes at her father. Could he be more obvious?
Eldon hung his head bashfully. âYour father is very generous with the kind words.â
âMy father is a lot of things,â mumbled Catt before sipping her tea.
âAll right, what can I say?â confessed Jeremiah, exasperated. âI think you two would make a fine couple.â
Catt shook her head. This was not the first, and probably not the last, time that Jeremiah had taken it upon himself to find her a suitable mate. âIf you donât mind, Daddy, I prefer to leave the matchmaking to my Heavenly Father, not my earthly one.â
Her father objected. âSometimes the Lord works through others, you know that, Catt.â
âAnd sometimes we get in the Lordâs way when we try to force things to happen, donât we, Daddy?â countered Catt. The irritation was now detectable in her voice. âGod said, âI know my plans for you.â He never said anything about needing us to help out with our own agendas.â
Jeremiah put down his fork and wiped his hands. âUh-huh,â he grunted and rose from his chair. âIf you two will excuse me, I need to make a phone call.â
Catt sighed as she watched her father walk away. âIâm sorry you got caught in the middle of all this, Eldon. My father is on a mission to get me down the aisle by any meansâand minister ânecessary!â
Eldon laughed. âHis heart is in the right place.â
âYeah, but his nose isnât!â
Eldon leaned forward. âTruth be told, Catt, I didnât need him to sell me on the idea of you being a good catch. I concluded that on my own a long time ago.â
She smiled. âI think youâre a good man, Eldon. I hope that we can grow to become great friends.â
He sat back in his chair. âSo all youâre looking for is friendship, huh?â
Catt shrugged. âI donât really think about much else. Work ties up a lot of my time. Plus, I have
