meant that virtually every attractive girl in school hated me.â
âHey, it worked to keep the guys from pestering you.â
âHmmm, but not quite so well with you,â she said with a laugh. âYou still managed to get passed phone numbers even with me sitting beside you at the bar.â
They both laughed. Going down memory lane was fun, to a point, so long as they didnât delve too deep into the past. Shots at dive bars, lying out under the stars and talking shit, studying together and getting in trouble for laughing too loud. They were fun memories that sheâd never forget.
âHold up. Is this the place?â
Chase bent down closer to her, his breath warm against her face as he spoke into her ear. âYou didnât really think Iâd gone all fancy rich boy on you, did you?â
Hope burst out laughing. They both stopped and she stared from the restaurant to the man standing beside her. âThe Rodeo Bar & Grill? Youâre screwing with me, right?â
âHey, I wasnât lying,â Chase said with a cheeky grin. âThey always find a table for me, and Iâm definitely a regular!â
Hope took her hand from Chaseâs arm and pushed him ahead of her. âGo on then, cowboy, open the door for me.â
The noise assaulted her eardrums the second he swung the heavy timber door back, the place already busy even though it was still early. It had been a long time since sheâd been out in a bar, but she hadnât forgotten that good old feeling of being sucked in by the music, the high of being about to have a drink and let her hair down. It was perfect.
âThank you,â she said, squeezing Chaseâs hand as she walked past him, waiting a step ahead for him to catch up.
âFor holding the door?â
She met his gaze head on, knowing sheâd done the right thing in saying yes to dinner. The last few months, hell, the last couple of years, had been all work and no play. âFor getting me out of the house,â she told him. âItâs been a while since I had some fun.â
âWell, it just so happens youâre out with someone who hasnât forgotten how to have a good time.â
Hope followed him to the bar, trying to match his stride. She was tall, close to five-nine, but even with heels on she wasnât a match for his six-foot-three frame. All three brothers were the same, tall and built with the faces and bodies of Greek gods. How the hell sheâd managed to stay out of his bed until graduation was a mystery even she didnât understand. Sheâd started out plain stubborn when it came to Chase, and then theyâd just started having too much fun for her to want to ruin it with sex, even though sheâd wanted him so damn bad. And there was also that factor of loving the flirting, but loving the fact that she was the only woman to turn him down even more.
âWhatâre you having?â he asked.
âSurprise me.â She pulled out a stool and sat, dropping her purse onto the bar and dragging herself a bit closer to Chase as he ordered.
âI thought weâd prop up the bar for a bit before grabbing a table.â
She glanced around. âIf we can find one.â The place was kind of packed. There were people standing around, the booths looked full, and there were a few vacant spots around the bar. She loved the way the beer was stashed in ice behind the counter, mustard and ketchup bottles sitting alongside jars of peanuts on the worn wooden bar. She couldnât have chosen a more perfect spot to spend an evening if sheâd tried.
âWeâre getting that little one in the corner over there,â he said, sliding some bills toward the bartender as two beers headed their way. âAnd the best thing about this place? They have a tequila bar.â
Hope reached for her beer, holding it up to see what it was before clinking it against Chaseâs. âI thought we
