back. I
see Jason and lacey sitting at the patio table. When I walk out I notice Ryan
sitting on the opposite side, with the other chair beside him opened, a beer
sitting in front of him. I grab one out of the mini fridge that Lacey and Jason
keep out back and head to sit beside him.
As
I sit down I notice that he is watching me again. He always does that and it
bugs the hell out of me.
“Hey”
I say to him as I sit down
I
look at Jason “your baby mama has the hardest job ever. We had to fire a
druggie, file two police reports for stalking and we were hit on by a group of
potential clients. There is no way I am going back to that place” I laugh
“I
don’t blame you” Lacey says “I don’t even know if I am cut out for it anymore.
I was ready to punch that one guy in the face for calling me a hippo, I’m not
even fat. He just wanted to piss me off.”
We
both started laughing, remembering the forty year old guy who came in and asked
us about someone who wasn’t even one of Lacey’s clients. When she told him that
she didn’t have the information he was looking for, he told her she looked like
a ‘sweaty hippo’ and Lacey punched him. When the cops came, she blamed it on
the hormones and the cop laughed.
I
started grabbing chips and salsa off the plate in front of Jason
“Hey
want a chip nerd?” he asks sarcastically, pushing the plate away from himself
and towards me
“They
taste better when they are yours ass face” I laugh
Lacey
starts to tell Jason about how tired she was and how her feet her when I look
over at Ryan
He’s
looking at Lacey and Jason with an odd expression. Almost like wanting.
Oh
my God, does he like my sister?
No,
there’s no way. Right?
He
leans back into his chair and turns his head towards me just as I move to open
my kindle and start reading from my new book. I turn the kindle on and I am a
few pages into my first chapter when I can feel him still looking at me. I am
trying to ignore him, but it’s hard when someone is actually staring at you.
I
look up at Lacey and Jason who have started making out. Like full blown groping
each other. All of a sudden Jason pulls his chair back, grabs Lacey’s hand and
drags her into the house. She looks back at me and waves, giggling as she
follows Jason inside.
“They
are like a bunch of teenagers” I say looking back down at my book
“Are
you going to look at me, at some point or keep pretending you are out here
alone?” he asks
I
stop and look at him “I’m looking at you” I say
He
smiles that damn smile. God what is it about him? It’s driving me seriously
crazy
“You
really didn’t like working with your sister?” He asks turning his chair so it’s
facing me and closer
“No,
I really didn’t. I loved helping her out but the drama with police reports for
her clients who are being harassed and firing people as clients. It’s too much.
I need a job, but I don’t know that I want her job”
Ryan
looked down at his lap “you could come work for me”
“What
do you mean work for you?” I ask
“I
need a new PA, the guy that I had for the last 2 years quit and moved to Hawaii
with his wife and new baby. Lacey has been helping me, but I was between jobs
so it wasn’t that hard, now I need someone who can schedule my appearances,
bring me my scripts and basically do all my odds and ends” he says
“Like
a maid?” I ask lifting an eyebrow
He
laughs” No I have one of those. Stella has been my maid for 5 years. I really
need someone I can trust. I could call the agency and find one, but I… I have a
serious issue with letting strangers into my personal life, not everything you
do will be for my job. Sometimes I need to make a doctor’s appointment and I
can’t always feel like I need it risked where I get my teeth cleaned. I think
you would be perfect for the job, you need the money for starting over and I
need someone I know and can trust.”
He
leans his chair so that his legs are now between
