thirty-five. Thirty-five is the newâ¦thirty-five.â
âDidnât you say you couldnât get pregnant without some kind of procedure?â Carly jabbed.
âYes, a procedure that I didnât have.â
Rocky chimed in, âYou had sex.â
âI married him. Before we had sex.â
âYou could be pregnant.â
â Shut up! I canât be!â I yelled at my former pastor. Again, I glanced around the room. âWhy are you all here?â
âItâs about Jazz,â Addie Lee said.
âThis is a Jazz intervention? You think Iâm addicted to Jazz?â
Souldier popped up from his chair. âNo, Jazz is addicted to you, Bell. Youâve got to go back to him. Heâsâ¦â
âA nutjob,â Jack supplied.
âCould you be a little more specific, Jack?â
âDonât call me Jack,â he said. âIâm Dad to you.â
âIâm sorry, Dad . What do you mean heâs a nutjob?â
âFirst of all, baby. You look terrific. And Addie never calls âem wrong. Congratulations.â
âDad, with all due respect to Momâs track record, Iâm afraid Iâm not pregnant.â
Carlyâs cigarette smoke was starting to nauseate me. I shifted my weight on my legs. âCarly, this is a smoke-free office.â
She kept puffing. âIâm under stress, and Timothy broke up with me. Is everything about you ?â
All attention went to her. My own intervention, and things couldnât even be about me.
âWhen did you and Tim break up?â
âThis morning. And where was my sister when I needed her? At home, doing pregnant things instead of answering any of her phones.â
âIâm not pregnant! And sorry about the phones. I forgot to charge them.â Again.
Maggie shook her head, her no-longer-blond hair swinging about. Her vivid blue eyes regarded me with a look of pity. âWhy, you practically need maternity clothes.â
âI do not need maternity clothes. I just need a size up. Maybe.â
Dad Jack added, âYou certainly are acting like a pregnant woman.â
I screamed. One of those high-pitched, tormented wails like the comedian Sam Kinison used to do, God rest him. âIâm not pregnant, people, and I find it hurtful, as well as distasteful, that youâre all persisting in this mass delusion because Iâve gained a few pounds.â
Rocky shook his head. âElisaâs the same way.â
âI said shut up, Rocky! This is not about your girlfriend. This intervention is about me !â
Jack scratched his head. âHis girlfriend? You mean heâs cheating on you already?â
âHeâs not cheating on me, Dad. Weâre not a couple.â
âBut I thought Rocky was in love with you,â Addie said.
âI do love Bell, but sheâs married,â Rocky said.
âYou young people confuse me,â Jack said. He looked at Rocky. âYou mean your girlfriend doesnât mind if youâre in love with a married woman?â
Kalaya answered. âNo, Elisa isnât his girlfriend. Yet. See, Rocky didnât realize he loved Elisa until he caught Bell sleeping with Jazz. Really, she set him free to love again.â
âJazz and I are married! It wasnât a sin to sleep with him.â
âDo I know you?â Rocky said to Kal.
I stomped my foot. âHello. My intervention here!â
And speaking of Jazz â¦When I had everyoneâs attention, I continued. âWhat did you people come here to tell me about my husband ?â
Jack spoke up. âHeâs in bad shape, especially at work. Itâs that whole thing about Kateâs murder. Heâs still mad because he thinks everybody turned on him. Said he gave his life to that department, and now he can see who his friends really are.â
I wasnât sure if I made the friends cut, despite the fact that Iâd risked my
