moonlight that filtered in through the open bathroom door.
“You’re not getting rid of me that easily. Nothing is going to happen tomorrow, other than us capturing the person harassing you.”
I licked my lips and nuzzled my face back into the crook of his neck. “Get some sleep, Lucca. I want you at your best tomorrow.”
He pressed a half kiss to my cheek and soon fell back into that deep sleep he’d been in only moments before.
I snuggled deeper into his embrace, my mind still wandering as I closed my eyes. I couldn’t help but feel like this was a surreal moment and that something was destined to come between us again. My mind drifted to the first time I saw Lucca. It was my freshman year and he was a junior. He was on the varsity football team, and the junior class president. Cam and I were new that year, mom having moved us again, because she couldn’t keep her head out of the bottle to keep a job. She had burned all her contacts and opportunities in our former area of Sacramento.
Cam joined the football team. Lucca and he became fast friends. Lucca never cared that we weren’t well off, he never cared that we lived in a little house in a not so great part of town. He was a good man then and a good man now. It seemed unbelievable that he forgave and accepted me back so easily. It was an opportunity I would not take for granted and I would fight for us just as I told him. All though I had to admit that coming face to face with Derek Blackwell was not something I was excited about. The man was cold and intimidating, but for Lucca I would take on the Hounds of Hell, he was worth it.
I don’t know when sleep finally took me, but my dreams were perfect as I relived parts of my past.
The lake stretched out in front of us. Cam was off on the jet ski, while Lucca and I soaked up the sun.
My eyes were closed to the bright rays, but they cracked as a shadow fell across my face. Lucca was back lit by warm yellow rays as he reached down and pulled me up into his arms and then over his shoulder.
“Lucca, don’t you dare !” I had shrieked as he made his way to the water.
He laughed with impish intent as the water reached past his waist.
“You have a choice Kenz… I can throw you in the water or I can set you in the water.”
“What will make your decision?” I asked.
“It depends on how nice you are to me for the next thirty seconds”
I smirked, though he couldn’t see it, and reached down slapping his ass. “Is that nice enough?”
Lucca laughed, the deep, warm sound sent shivers through my body. It was a sound I loved to hear. He adjusted me and I wrapped my legs around his waist. I cupped his face and kissed him tenderly.
When he pulled back he smiled at me. Little dimples forming on his gorgeous sun kissed face.
“I love you , Mackenzie”
It was the first time he told me he loved me and it was the first time all the negative pieces in my life seemed to no longer matter. They drifted away on the summer breeze and I felt light and loved for the first time in my life.
Chapter Ten: Luc
Confrontation and Devious Plans
Kenzi was still sleeping with a soft smile gracing her face when I got up to get ready to head off to the warehouse. I sighed, not wanting to leave her. I leaned over to press a gentle kiss to her forehead. Her arms reached out to circle my neck an adorable whimper left her soft lips as she pulled me back to her.
“No,” she whispered. “Stay.”
I smiled and kissed her lips tenderly. “I have to go, Kenz.”
“No,” she said again her voice a little louder this time. “Ten more minutes.”
I chuckled and let her pull me back to the bed, I drew her into my arms. She was torturing me as her naked body wrapped around me.
She smiled. “I love that sound.”
I rubbed her back and waited until her breathing deepened. Once I was sure she was asleep again I slipped from her arms and pulled the covers back over her.
“I love you, Kenz.”
I moved quietly from the
