that you leave now and get there yesterday.” Sean clapped him on the shoulder. The other man was wearing workout clothes when he normally favored banged-up khakis and beer T-shirts. “I’ll take over your duties.”
“Classes, yeah, but you can’t take over with Maggie. She’s phase one.” He’d told Heather that Maggie might reach phase two soon, but she wasn’t there yet.
“No need. She’s going with you, mate.”
“I’m supposed to drag Maggie to Wyoming?” Not everyone knew where the coma waystation was located. The information was on a need-to-know basis.
Zeke knew because he’d put Karen there and locomoted to Adi on occasion. Sean knew because he was an orator.
“Vigil’s orders,” Sean said. “Sounds like it’s more than an overnighter. It’s also classified. Only you, me and Maggie get to know.”
“Hell.” Zeke rolled his shoulders before tension could ball his muscles into knots. “We got manifestations two, three times a week, and we barely have the numbers to cover our area as it is. I’m needed here.”
“Apparently you’re needed more there.” Sean’s medium brown eyes sparked with curiosity. “What’s up with Maggie anyway? She’s stuck in first gear. There a problem?”
Sean was often on Zeke’s field missions. In fact, he’d been there when Maggie and Hayden had manifested the first time. As a non-sentry, Sean wasn’t privy to all details, but Zeke couldn’t hide the fact that Maggie’s phase one duration had reached record lengths.
“Not really. Everyone’s adjusting to the new protocols and shit, and I’m supposed to be extra careful with her since we need L5s so bad. Two L5 trainees in one base at the same time is tricky anytime, and the elevated wraith activity makes it worse.” L5s were rare, and Maggie and Hayden’s dual presence was unusual.
“Trickier for a sentry to work around an everlasting phase one sleep schedule.” Sean had an L2 student in phase one and an L3 about to graduate. “In my division, we’d have packed her off to the curators by now.”
Zeke swallowed a snarl. “This ain’t your division.”
Sean just smiled, infuriatingly cheery. “Maybe that’s why Ms. Sharma wants you and Maggie at the waystation. Got a curator waiting.”
Was that what this was about? Had the curators decided to steal Maggie from him? But why would they demand she be brought to the coma station, of all places?
    Unless…
Zeke’s fists clenched. His vision hazed red. He’d finally had a breakthrough with Maggie’s training. If they thought it was time to shock her into a coma like Karen, he’d take her and disappear. Somehow. Except anytime he or she entered the dreamsphere, the others could locate them. And if they didn’t enter the dreamsphere, they’d get sick.
Zeke realized Sean had put several yards between them. The other man held up his hands, palms out. “Steady, mate. I’m just the go-between.”
Zeke rubbed his forehead to hide his face…and keep himself from coldcocking the closest target. “They wouldn’t do that without consulting me.”
“No use overthinking it.” Sean stuck his thumbs in his elastic waistband. “Ms. Sharma’s a vigil, and what she says, goes.”
“It’s a long freaking way to fly blind. I’m going to check with Adi in the sphere before I hightail it to Wyoming.” No alucinator below vigil was supposed to enter the dream dimension without it being scheduled, assigned, announced or approved as part of standard duties.
This counted as announcing it in Zeke’s book, and he approved it himself. He was a damned sentry, after all.
“Countermanding a direct order?” Sean shook his head. “You Yanks amaze me sometimes.”
“What’s Adi gonna do, demote me? That would just mean less work for me and more for some other schmuck.” Zeke waved Sean into the dojo and returned to his room. In two more minutes, he’d tranced out and entered the dreamsphere to find Adi or her orator.
    He wasn’t taking
