then. Malik was the first man he had lost when he started running the E.R. There was a malpractice suit that was still in court and he got a sinking feeling in his gut. Of all the people and all the scenarios, he was not prepared for that one.
He had made a mistake, though it was because there was very few doctor’s on call at that time of night. While he had thought the man was stable, he moved while Rick was away and one of the bullets in his chest had nicked a blood vessel and he had bled out while Rick was working on another patient that he had felt was more critical. He had been wrong and had lost the patient, Meeka’s husband and this boy’s father. That night had changed Rick’s life forever and had made him promise himself that he would never make another mistake.
His face turned white and after he realized the boy was still looking at him expectantly, he handed him the bag. Rick found it hard to meet the child’s eyes all of a sudden and guilt washed over him in a painful wave.
“Here is something for you Malik, I hope you like it.”
Malik dug into the colored paper tissue and from his expression, he did. While his co-worker had said bring a mitt and ball, he decided to bring that and a little handheld game system with a few games. It was still pretty cold outside and he figured he had his bases covered if he didn’t like sports as much.
“Wow mom, look!”
Meeka eyed Rick, not missing the expression he had made for a moment and she wondered what it was about. It was not the time to get into it though, so she smiled at her son while he opened the package.
“You shouldn’t have Rick, it is too much.”
“No it is not. I was sad to say I didn’t know what he liked, so I figured every kid likes sports and video games.”
Meeka laughed, feeling a lightness overcome her. It seemed to be going okay and she couldn’t have asked for something better. She ushered them into the table with the announcement of dinner being ready. Malik was always hungry and dinner was a little late for him. This was the first time she had cooked for Rick, but everyone loved her cooking, so she wasn’t too worried about that.
“This is really good Meeka. I didn’t know you could cook.”
“My mommy makes the best spaghetti in the whole wide world.”
Meeka smiled at the compliment.
“Thank you baby.”
“I think you are right, it is the best spaghetti in the whole wide world.”
There was a tenderness she was not expecting in his eyes. She still wondered about what he was thinking when they first met, but she did not want to spoil the great meeting that was happening. The dinner went better than she could have imagined and it was soon time for her son to take a bath.
Rick stayed around watching a little television while Meeka gave her son a bath and then got him ready for bed. He listened to her say her prayers with her son and he was touched by the dialogue. He found that he really liked the boy and the boy seemed to like him, so that was good. He was full of energy and Rick found him endearing. It made him re-think his decisions and wonder to himself why he didn’t having any children yet. Then his mind went to Meeka and the possibility of them having one together. While they were using protection most of the time, there were a few times in the heat of the moment where they didn't, but he secretly liked the idea of Meeka carrying his baby. The very idea made his groin ache for her and his heart raced faster. He thought again, about Malik's dad, and his heart felt like it stopped. What would he tell her? Or does he even have to? It was his first time running the E.R. and he had never made a mistake since. But something told him he needed to be straight with her. Or should he save her the extra anguish, as he couldn't change the past?
Chapter Thirteen
“Sorry that took so long. We have a routine and he won’t let me deviate from it without a fight.”
“I don’t mind really. I think you two are so
