this. Should I really be this nervous?”
“It is a big step. Are you sure you are ready for this?”
“Yeah, I think I am going to ask her to marry me soon, if all goes well. I realize this is really fast, but I'm not getting any younger, and I haven't felt this happy since I was college aged. There is just something about Meeka that is so sweet and absolutely drives me wild. While I don't believe in fairy tales, this last month or so has been nothing more than pure bliss for me. She already told me that if we don’t get along, me and her son that is, it isn’t going to work, so I have to win him over”
“Well, you can understand that though, can’t you?”
“Yes, but I am still nervous.”
“So what about the boy’s father?”
“He died a couple years ago, but she doesn’t talk about it much. I don’t want to bring it up because it seems to upset her a lot.”
“Well, that could be a good thing. Don’t have to worry about co-parenting drama.”
Rick shook his head in agreement. He had thought the very same thing. It was sad though for a kid to lose his dad so early in his life. He still remembered him, but Rick knew as he got older, his memories would fade some. While Rick hadn’t really thought about having children before, he was forty and he knew that he should start if he wanted a family. Rick thanked his co-worker and took off around six to go get ready and find something to bring over to her son. He realized then that he didn’t even know his name.
Chapter Twelve
Meeka was nervous and she had not even told her son that Rick was coming over. When she gave him three plates to set the table though, he asked who was coming over.
“Well Mommy has a friend coming over that I want you to meet.”
“Who are they?”
“Just a friend and I want you two to be friends too.”
“Oh. What is his name?”
“His name is Rick and he will be here in a little while.”
“Grandma said you were dating him.”
Meeka looked at her son to gauge his reaction. She had never dated since her husband died, so she wasn’t even sure that he knew what that meant.
“Does that mean he is going to be my new daddy?”
Her son’s face was hopeful. Meeka felt a clenching in her throat and tears wanting to burst forward from her eyes. She turned away and stirred the sauce on the stove. When she turned back around, her son was looking at her with hopeful brown eyes and she had to fight back the tears again. She never wanted her son to see her cry, but anytime they talked about his father Malik, she still got misty eyed.
“I just want you guys to be good friends, baby. Malik will always be your daddy. That is why you have his name. But sometimes, you can have friends that become part of your family too. For now though, I just want you to be respectful and on your best behavior, okay?”
“Okay Mommy.”

Dinner was almost ready by the time she heard the buzzer. She had not even dressed, but she went to the buzzer and pushed the button after she knew it was him. Meeka waited for him to come up and she was more nervous than she was when they went on their first date. The idea of introducing her son to anyone brought on a little anxiety and she really hoped they would get along.
When he came up to the door, she answered and Rick had a big smile on his face. He was carrying a gift bag and she was touched by the thought behind it. He looked almost as nervous as she did and it endeared him to her more. She gave him a quick peck on the cheek before moving past to let him in.
Malik was standing there looking up at him with those big brown eyes and Rick bent down to his knees and said hello.
“My name is Rick, what’s yours?”
“Malik Andre Brown.”
The name sounded familiar and he knew almost immediately where he had heard it before.
“Nice to meet you Malik. That is a great name.”
“It was my daddy’s name.”
Rick closed his eyes for a moment, a painful memory coming back. It all hit him
