theyâre both stoked about me. But,â he added, âwhat else is new?â
Arnie chuckled. âAt least youâre not conceited or anything.â
âWho? Me?â
They both laughed.
âMelanie is having a cow about this,â Arnie said seriously.
Bobby shifted the phone to his other ear. âYeah, I know. Whatâs her problem, man? Sheâs got
you
now. She isnât still hung up on
me
âis she?â
âNo,â Arnie replied thoughtfully.
âSo why is she on my case?â Bobby demanded. âWhy does she care what I do with the Wade twins?â
âYou know girls,â Arnie answered flatly.
Bobby started to reply with a nasty comment aboutMelanie. But the doorbell rang downstairs, interrupting him. He told Arnie goodbye, hung up the phone, and glanced at the clock radio. A little after ten.
Who would be at the door this late?
The bell rang again. And again. Bobbyâs parents were at a neighborâs. âGive me a break! Iâm coming!â Bobby called, hurrying down the stairs two at a time.
He pulled open the front door.
âBree! Whatâs wrong?â he asked.
She stared at him with troubled eyes. âBobby,â she whispered. âWeâve got to talk.â
chapter 12
Bree Found Out!
â
B reeâwhatâs up?â Bobby asked. âItâs so late andââ
She brushed past him into the house. Her black hair was tied behind her head with a blue band. She wore a pale green polo shirt over baggy faded denim shorts.
Sheâs found out! Bobby realized, a heavy feeling forming in the pit of his stomach.
Bree has found out about Samantha and me.
As he led the way to the den, his mind raced with ideas about how to handle it. I could lie and tell her sheâs crazy, he told himself. I could tell her Iâve never been out with her sister.
Or I could just shrug it off and say, âWhatâs the big deal?â
No, wait. I could admit I went out with Samanthaâbut tell Bree that
she
is my favorite, that
sheâs
the best.
Yeah, Bobby decided. Sheâll go for that in a big way.
Girls just want to be told that
theyâre
the best.
Sheâll eat it up. And then weâll be right back where we were. Everyone all happy and bright eyed again.
Bree dropped down close to Bobby on the leather couch. She tugged nervously at a strand of hair that had fallen loose. Then she clasped her hands tightly in her lap.
âItâitâs about Samantha,â she stammered, raising her troubled eyes to his.
Uh-oh. Here it comes, Bobby thought. âSamantha?â he said innocently. âWhatâs up with Samantha?â
He held his breath and waited for Bree to accuse him. Sheâs probably going to start bawling, he thought unhappily. I really hate it when girls cry.
âSamantha isâseeing someone,â Bree said, her voice just above a whisper.
âYeah. So?â Bobby asked.
Here it comes. Here it comes.
Hereâs where she bursts into tears and says, âBobby, how could you?â
Bree took a deep breath. Her eyes burned into Bobbyâs as if searching for something. âSamantha has been sneaking out with someone,â she told him, clasping and unclasping her hands. âI know she has been.â
And do you also know that itâs me?
Bobby wondered, wishing she would put an end to the suspense.
Letâs just get this over with, Bree, he thought.
âWell, why are you so upset?â he asked sympathetically.
âIâI asked Samantha about it,â Bree continued, lowering her gaze. âI asked her who she was seeing, and she wouldnât tell me.â
Bobby waited for Bree to continue, but she chewed her bottom lip instead.
Confused, Bobby waited. But when he realized she wasnât going to say any more, he broke the silence. âAnd thatâs why youâre upset?â
âWell, donât you see?â she asked
