head. As he made his way to the music room, he was thinking about trying it on the guitar.
The band was really starting to
cook,
Bobby thought, waving to some kids heading out the door. Bright afternoon sunlight burst into the hall as they pushed the double doors open.
Too bad Paul was threatening to quit. Just when they were starting to play so well together. Paul had given an excuse about having to get an after-school job.
But Bobby thought he knew the real reasonâPaul was jealous of him. Heâs a good, dependable player. But he doesnât have my style, and he knows it.
Turning a corner, waving to a group of girls from hisclass, he decided to have a talk with Paul. Iâll tell him how much we need him, Bobby decided. Iâll make him think heâs the leader, make him feel like a big man. Heâll stay.
Spotting Kimmy Bass at her locker, Bobby crept up behind her and gave her hair a hard tug.
Kimmy shrieked angrily and spun around. âBobbyâyou creep!â She sneered at him. âGet your disgusting paws off me!â
âYou love it!â Bobby shot back, grinning.
âCreep,â Kimmy repeated in a low voice.
âAre you doing anything Saturday night?â Bobby asked her.
She stared at him suspiciously. âWhy?â
âJust asking,â Bobby said, his blue eyes returning the stare.
âNo, Iâm not doing anything,â Kimmy told him.
âThen why not take a bath?â Bobby let out a high-pitched hyena laugh.
âAaaaagh!â Kimmy let out a disgusted cry and punched him in the chest. âYou really are a pig, Bobby!â
âOink-oink. Takes one to know one.â He backed away from another flying fist, and chuckling to himself, hurried down the hall.
Sheâs nuts about me, he told himself confidently. Totally nuts about me.
But I donât have time for her now. Iâve got enough to handle. Twins!
Arnie and Melanie were standing by the music room window, talking quietly. Paul was noodling at his keyboard. âHeyâwhatâs up?â Bobby called.
Arnie called out a greeting. But Melanie only acteddisgusted, narrowing her dark eyes and then turning toward the window.
âI
see
youâre having a bad hair day, Melanie. But why take it out on me?â Bobby demanded.
Melanie didnât turn around. She crossed her arms in front of her chest. âAre you still dating both Wade twins?â she asked through clenched teeth.
âYeah. Maybe,â Bobby replied. âWhatâs it to you?â
Melanie didnât reply. Arnie shrugged.
âAre we going to rehearse or not?â Paul called impatiently from behind his keyboard.
Melanie turned to face Bobby, her features tight. âI donât believe you,â she said sharply.
Bobby grinned back at her. âI donât believe it either!â he exclaimed. âTwo at once. Even
Iâm
impressed!â
âWhen are you
not
impressed with yourself?â Melanie accused.
âPaulâs right. Weâve got to practice,â Arnie interrupted.
But Bobby saw that Melanie was determined to have her say. âYou had a study date with Samantha the other night and Bree showed up at your house. Is that really true?â she demanded.
Bobby grinned. âI guess people are talking about me, huh?â
âIs it true?â Melanie asked.
Bobby nodded. âYeah. No problem. Samantha got out the back door just as Bree came into the living room. Bree didnât suspect a thing.â
âClose one, man,â Arnie murmured, grinning. âWow.â
Melanie flashed Arnie an angry look, then returnedto Bobby. âEveryone in school is talking about it,â she told Bobby. âI know you think itâs really great. But what makes you think Bree wonât find out about you and her sister?â
âIs it
your
problem?â Bobby shot back.
âTheyâre my friends,â Melanie replied with
