be touched?”
“No, I just don’t like my personal space invaded. I’m finding it hard to concentrate when you’re pushing up against me.”
“Fine, I’ll give you all the space you need.” With exaggerated movements, he sidestepped to the right, putting a couple feet between the two of them. Sydney didn’t care what Bennett thought of her. The man obviously had a high opinion of himself and probably wasn’t used to women not appreciating his attention. Well, that was just too damn bad. What was taking Jack so long? He’d gone in there with Anna and a couple others to plant the bombs.
“Come on, come on,” she muttered under her breath.
“If I were in full charge of this mission, it would have been completed already.” Sydney rolled her eyes. This had to be the fifth time she’d heard Bennett mutter that under his breath. If he said it again, she would strangle him. “Well, you’re not,” she shot back at him.
“They’ve been gone longer than they should have. If they’re not back in five minutes, I’m going in after them,” Bennett declared.
“Don’t you think you’re being a little premature?” Bennett glanced at his watch. “No. We’ve given them enough time.” As much as she didn’t want to agree with him, he had a point. They were taking a long time, and she hoped everything was okay. Sydney shivered when she saw the building she used to work in. Cryo Cor. She wondered how many of her former co-workers were still alive. When she’d left, a lot of them were on the verge of some type

of health malfunction, due mainly to the chemicals in the food they were eating. Maybe it was too late to save them all, but when this building was destroyed, production of the chemical GXT would cease. This was where it was manufactured.
Suddenly, a loud siren went off, piercing her ears. What was going on? Her heart pounded rapidly in her fear. Her hand automatically went to the pistol strapped to her side. She turned to Bennett. “Someone must have sounded an alarm. We’ll have to go get them.”
He glared at her. “I’m in charge here and I’ll call the shots.” Sydney didn’t have time to deal with his bruised ego. Pulling the gun out of its holster she dashed from behind the bushes. Just as she ran toward the building, Jack and the others appeared.
“Let’s get out of here,” he shouted over the siren. “They must have anticipated us trying this. We tripped a silent alarm of some sort but the bombs have been planted and we have to get out of here.”
They ran away from the building, only to be confronted by a group of law enforcement officers. Some were human while others were Cyrellian. They’d already decided no humans were to be harmed during this mission unless absolutely necessary.
“This way,” Jack said. “I know a shortcut.” The team followed him although Bennett did not look happy. The agents fired their weapons, but the team managed to round a corner unscathed, or at least Sydney thought so, until she heard a scream.
It was Anna. At first Sydney thought she’d been hurt, but when she saw Jack, she realized her worst fear had come true. He had been wounded.

Chapter Five
“Jack!” she screamed as she saw him stumble to the ground. Sydney rushed to his side. Blood gushed from just above his shoulder blade.
Bennett shot her and Jack a look of contempt. “You knew there would be casualties. Leave him behind or we’ll all get caught, you fool.” Her nostrils flared. She hated that man with a passion. “Go ahead. I’m staying here with Jack.”
Thankfully Jack was still conscious. He turned his head in her direction. “He’s right, Sydney. You have to keep running, or they’ll catch up to you.” Sydney shook her head. “Then they’ll have to catch me because I’m not leaving you. Can you get up?”
Jack rolled over with gritted teeth and managed to wobble to his feet with her assistance. “The building should explode any minute now, so that
