one
The following day, Saturday, I didnât hear a word from the LBD. I assumed everyone was working on GCSE projects, what with the deadlines being near. But by Sunday night when Fleur ignored my third totally hilarious text message, I decided to call.
âYes,â Fleur said rather oddly.
âAll right, babe?â I chirped. âWhyâs your phone off? You okay?â
âIâm fine,â she clipped.
âEr . . . been busy?â
âJust studying,â she said. Fleur sounded angry. âOh, and Cressida popped by with a biology textbook for me last night. We made brownies together.â
âRight,â I said. There was an awkward silence. âYou sound weird, Fleur, whatâs up?â
âNothing,â said Fleur. âGotta go.â
âFleur!â I shouted. âTell me whatâs up!â
âHmmm . . . well, okay then!â Fleur said, taking a deep breath. âI just think that if you and Claude find me such an embarrassment in public, then I wonât come out with you ever again!â
âEh?â I said.
âSo I act like a chimpanzee, do I?â she yelled. âWell, thank you very much! Some friend you are. At least Iâm not uptight and paranoid like you!â
âBut, I . . . ,â I stuttered.
âAnd Iâve just phoned Miss Claudette âacts like a forty-year-old womanâ Cassiera and given her a few home truths about herself too!â
âOh God,â I groaned.
âAnd FYI, Iâm not such a cheap tart that I canât even remember who my current boyfriend is!â shouted Fleur.
âFleur!â I yelled. âThatâs not whatââ
âI canât believe youâd both slag me off like that,â said Fleur, her voice crackling into raw tears.
âCressida told you all this, didnât she?â I screamed. âWell, what a shock! Fleur, you have to listen to me about Cressidaââ
âCressida accidentally told me a little bit of it,â sniffled Fleur. âAnd donât you start blaming this on her just because youâve never liked her. Donât turn this back onto her!â
âFleur, it wasnât like that!â I protested, but on the other end of the line I could hear the usually brash, fearless Fleur Iris Swan sobbing her heart out.
And thatâs when things started to go downhill.
Silences, gossiping, arguments, mistrust.
It took me two hours to calm Fleur down and explain the perfectly innocent context in which Claude had made those silly remarks. Claude was pretty upset too, especially as Fleur had called her âtediousâ and âbig-headed.â
By midnight, we were all cool again. But I was determined to hear Cressida Sleethâs explanation for this.
showdown
That Monday, I spent my entire German class drilling holes in the back of Cressidaâs head with my eyes. When the lunch bell sounded, I let Frau Chalmers and the other pupils file out before cornering Ms. Sleeth in the classroom all alone.
âRight, you little tofu-munching freak,â I began. âI want a word with you!â
Cressida lifted her gaze and smiled at me serenely. âDarling, I donât speak to you, remember?â she said, shooing me away with her tiny hand. âYouâre the dull one.â
I have to say, that sort of floored me. Turning on one rib-boned pump, Cressida made for the door.
âOh? Erm, right! You admit that, do you?â I yelled, following after her, grabbing her hair and yanking her blonde tresses backward. âYouâve tried pushing me out. Now you want Fleur and Claude at loggerheads! What are you getting out of this . . . you total weirdo?â
Cressida stopped in her tracks and smirked. âWell, at the moment, sweetheart, Iâm being taken to all the best parties by Fleur and Iâm getting my geography and history homework done for me by Claude. While you . . . well,
