â for ME?â shouted Harriet Bright.
âYes!â said Melly Fanshawe. âItâs Best Friendâs Day today! Like Motherâs Day and Fatherâs Day and Left-Handerâs Day, only much much better. It can be any day of the week.â
âReally and truly?â asked Harriet Bright.
âYes,â said Melly Fanshawe. âMum made a chocolate cake yesterday so she said I needed a special occasion to eat it.â
âSo Reece Thomas isnât your new best friend?â asked Harriet Bright.
âOh no,â said Melly Fanshawe. âBoys are smelly.â She paused. âBut sometimes they know really excellent balloon shops.â
âAnd this was the secret?â said Harriet Bright.
Melly Fanshawe nodded. âAnd I kept it all to myself. Mum said if you can keep a secret then the surprise is even bigger and better!â
And it was true, because all at once Harriet Bright felt very happy.
Melly Fanshawe was still her very best friend in the whole world and this
secret secret
was thesecret
she had
