paper over to her. It had been almost a week since Tasha had heard from him and she was starting to think she never would again. She didn’t know where he lived or much else about him. All she knew was that she missed him and then her heart broke. There on the front page of the paper was her Demitri. He was covering his face while the police led him away in handcuffs. There was another picture of him in the police car, as well as a picture of his car being towed.

“Billionaire heir to a Russian fortune, Demitri Ostvolv was arrested Thursday night as the ringleader of an illegal ‘dust’ drug enterprise.”

Tasha’s hand shook and she looked up at her friend. “Oh my God!”

“I know, can you believe he has that much money!”

Tasha wasn’t thinking of the money. She was thinking of the fact that she was in love with a drug kingpin. Her eyes kept reading, learning about the murder charges that had been filed over an overdose death. Her heart was breaking and she didn’t think she could breathe. He had been arrested the same day they had last seen each other. With everything going on in her head, for some reason the thought she kept going to was that he had not had a chance to call her.

She felt numb after she read the report. She didn’t know what to say or what to do. Tasha wanted to see him, to ask him why he didn’t tell her. Why he let her fall in love with him, knowing he was just going to break her heart in the end anyways? It all just seemed so suddenly unfair and Tasha did not know what to say. She felt like a fool and she wished she had never gushed about him. Now she just felt like an idiot, like a love-struck fool.

“What are you going to do, Tasha?”

She shrugged. “Nothing. What is there to do? I can’t have a man like that around Jonell, so it doesn’t matter what I felt about him.”

Even as she said the words, she knew it was true. It was true that even if she could get over the fact of his bad business, she could never be with him because of her son. Tasha tried to keep him away from that sort of thing and she certainly couldn’t marry him or be with him in a real relationship. She mourned what could have been and the most perfect night she had ever had in her thirty years on the planet. Tasha needed time to mourn the man.

Demitri bonded out as soon as bond was set. His lawyer beat him to the jail, as Rusco had called him in. Though he was there waiting with an open check, it still took almost three hours to book him and release him. The cops were taking their time, stalling so the rest of the squad could ransack his house looking for evidence from the warrant they had talked a judge into signing.

Demitri said nothing, refusing to answer any questions. At the CCTV arraignment, he pled not guilty and bond was set at half a million dollars. He smirked at the amount and he was out as soon as booking was finished. It was a ridiculous amount, but at least they had let him out. The prosecutor had tried to argue that he was a flight risk, especially since he had a dual residency in Russia.

The bond made his life miserable. He was not able to leave the country, even to go home to Russia. The Feds watched his every move. He had nothing in his possession involved with the dust business, because he had never known about it until a week ago. Demitri had spent all that time making sure that his family and employees were as far away from that as possible. He was not sure how they had come to him, but when he heard that his uncle had been caught with several pounds of the deadly synthetic, he had testified that Demitri was the boss and he was just a lackey. Demitri’s lawyer tried to assure him that it would all work out, but he was not so sure.

He tried several times to call Tasha and she would not pick up. He figured that she had seen the news report, but he couldn’t believe that she wouldn’t even give him a chance to try to
