of attention on her special day rather than having to share it with her sonâs wedding.â
So Grace was tactful and kind, too, Roland thought. Rather than throw a hissy fit at the idea of sharing her wedding day, sheâd tried to make the older woman feel important.
âAnd,â Grace added, âI wanted my sister to be my bridesmaid.â
Roland blinked in surprise. âShe didnât want Bella to be a bridesmaid?â
âCynthia didnât like Bella. She said Bel was too headstrong and too quirky.â
âBellaâs a free spirit, yesâand sheâs great,â Roland said. âIâm beginning to dislike your almost-mother-in-law.â
âBella didnât like Cynthia, either. She called her âMrs Concrete Hairâ.â
âBecause it was never out of place?â Roland had to stifle a grin.
Grace nodded. âCynthia prided herself on always being turned out immaculately. And she wore a lot of beige.â
âDid you like her?â he asked.
Grace wrinkled her nose. âDo I have to answer that?â
âYes.â
She smiled wryly. âI think Cynthia and I didnât meet each otherâs expectations. I wanted a mother-in-law whoâs like my own mumâsomeone whoâs warm and supportive, whoâd be there if I needed help, but who would always encourage me to stand on my own two feet. Someone I could be friends with and whoâd make me feel part of the family.â
Roland thought of his own parents. That summed up their relationship with Lynetteâand his own with Lynetteâs parents. Heâd assumed that was completely normal, but maybe theyâd both been lucky.
âAnd what did Cynthia want?â he asked.
Grace looked away. âSomeone whoâd keep up appearances at all times and do whatever she told them to.â
âWhich doesnât sound like much fun.â
âIt wasnât,â Grace said, her voice so quiet that he could barely hear her. âI hated being judged all the time, and always falling short.â
Which was what heâd done to her. No wonder sheâd been so prickly with him, at first.
And now he was beginning to understand her. Grace was the quiet, sensible sister. The one whoâd thought sheâd wanted her partner to be completely the opposite of her unreliable father. And yet what sheâd really wanted was to be swept off her feet...
An idea was forming in his head.
A really crazy idea.
But maybe it could work. Could he ask her?
Should he ask her?
âObviously cancelling the wedding shook up your life a bit,â he said, âbut why did it mean that you became a temp and you taking over the lease of Bellaâs flat?â
âBecause I worked for Howardâs familyâs accountancy practice,â she said. âI could hardly keep working there when Iâd just cancelled my wedding to the bossâs son. I couldnât ask them for a reference, in the circumstances, so temping was my only real option. Plus Iâd already given notice to my landlord, and heâd leased my flat to someone else.â
So cancelling the wedding had cost Grace her job and her home, too. Now he understood what she meant about a decision turning her life upside down. And it was a decision she clearly hadnât made lightly.
âSo what are you looking for, Grace?â he asked carefully. âMarriage?â
âMaybe, maybe not. Iâve just come out of a long relationship, and I guess right now I need to find out who I am and think about what I really want.â She wrinkled her nose. âI just wanted to be swept off my feet once in a while. Which I know isnât going to happen, because Iâm very ordinaryâIâm not free-spirited and brave like Bella is.â
The crazy idea suddenly seemed that little bit less crazy. Maybe Graceâquiet, sensible Graceâcould help him move on, haul him out of the
