change it?â
âYou donât like it.â She was crestfallen. âItâs the latest â¦â
âIâm not fifteen and a half collar any more, sweetheart.â
âOh!â She sat on the bed only to leap to her feet when he moved towards her. âI bought them in the warehouse so there wonât be a problem. Itâs just as well I didnât unpack them.â
âIt is.â Taking the box from her, he pushed it back on top of the others.
âWhat size are you now?â
âSeventeen and a half.â
âYouâre so different. I would have never ââ
âRecognised me. Thatâs what Katie and Martin said.â
âYou saw Katie?â
âOnly for a few minutes. Martin said sheâd been worrying about my reaction to her marriage to your father.â
âShe has.â She turned to him. âYouâre not angry?â
âI wasnât pleased when I received her letter telling me about it, but Iâve had time to get used to the idea. They seem happy.â
âThey are.â She looked away self-consciously when she realised he was still watching her.
âUnderneath the extra pounds and inches Iâm the same Jack you married, Helen. Come here.â He opened his arms and she went to him, but she couldnât stop herself from trembling when he kissed her.
âIâm so glad youâre back. It must have been horrible in Cyprus.â
âIt was.â
âYour wounds ââ
âHave healed.â There was a note in his voice that warned her not to probe further.
âIâll make us something to eat.â
âDo you mind if I have a bath first?â
âNo.â She jumped away from him. âThereâs towels in the bathroom.â
âI saw them. You expecting a platoon?â
âThereâs more in the airing cupboard if you need them,â she continued, undeterred, returning to the landing and opening both the airing cupboard and bathroom doors. âSoap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, razor blades.â She slid back a mirror in the bathroom and revealed well-stocked shelves. âI bought you hair cream â I hope Brylcreem is all right â shaving soap and aftershave. I wasnât sure youâd still be using Old Spice.â
âHelen.â He slipped his fingers beneath her chin and lifted her head, forcing her to look him in the eye. âItâs perfect. Everything is absolutely perfect.â
âIâll start running your bath.â
âYou donât need to do everything for me.â
âThen Iâll go downstairs and â¦â Ducking under his arm she almost ran away from him. Deciding she needed a little time to grow accustomed to the idea of him being in the house, he went into the bathroom and turned on the taps.
Robin pushed his shirt into his trousers, buckled his belt and pulled his zipper. âFit for the pub.â He looked at Emily who was struggling to fasten her bra. âHere, youâre hopeless.â Tugging her blouse free from her skirt, he slipped his hands beneath it and hooked it for her.
âThank you. Can we talk for a minute?â
âIn the pub.â He reached for his keys.
âPlease, Robin, here.â
âItâs bloody freezing.â
âWe need to set a date for the wedding.â
âNot until everyoneâs stopped talking about your father.â
Knotting her hands together, she looked down at her lap. âThat will be too late.â She paused before finally finding the courage to say what she had been trying to tell him for weeks. âIâm pregnant.â
He turned off the engine and stared at the sea. Dark, gleaming, a narrow silver path glittered to the horizon reflecting the light of the moon. âI donât understand ⦠How can you be?â
âWe have sex every time we meet.â
âI always use
