doing the best I can!â he barked. Then he cleared his throat and gave her a forced smile. âOkay. You two just sit tight until I can find the answer.â
âSit tight?â Lena cried. âIâm a cupi d !â
âMatchmaker,â Marcus corrected.
âWhatever you call it, this is insane! I canât deal with this stuff when I have an audition tomorrow.â
âGive me a day, and I will straighten this out,â Eddie told her. âIâll make sure you wonât get any assignments until things are back to normal.â
Lena shook her head. âBut what about Mrs. Katz? Sheâs supposed to be dead!â
âThe love boost must have given her soul a little more energy, but it is temporary. Itâll all sort itself out.â
âWhat if I hurt someone again like I did with that woman?â Marcusâs voice wobbled. âI almost killed her.â
âShe will be fine,â Eddie said, but he didnât sound very convincing. âThat should have never happened. Your power is designed to work only on the person itâs intended for, and it can only be transferred when you are focused on your target. What happened today was a fluke.â
âIf it happened once, canât it happen again?â Lena asked.
âKid, I will fix this,â Eddie said flatly. âGive me a day.â Then he hopped on his Segway and sped off, almost like he couldnât wait to get away.
Chapter 8
âI canât believe he just left us here!â Lena said, staring after Eddie as he disappeared around a curve.
âMaybe we should kind of, um, stick together the next couple of days until this is all figured out.â Now that Marcus was finally spending time with Lena again, he wasnât going to blow it. Even if it was under such crazy circumstances. Besides, how was he supposed to deal with all of this by himself?
Lena shook her head. âNo way. I canât go around pretending to make people fall in love.â
âWhat do you mean pretending ?â Marcus asked. âWhat I do is as real as what you do.â
âNo offense,â she said, tucking her hair behind her ears, âbut death is a real, biological thing. Love isâ¦wellâ¦â
Marcusâs mouth sagged open. âAre you telling me you donât believe that love exists?â
âOur brains might think it does, but thatâs only chemicals tricking us into feeling things. Itâs not real. Trust me. My dad studies this stuff. He knows.â
Marcus couldnât believe what he was hearing. âWhat about my grandparents? They were married for forty years, and they were the happiest people I knew.â Grandma had died when Marcus was seven, so he didnât remember much about her, but he did have memories of his grandparents always smiling when they were together. And Grandpa still talked about Grandma Lily all the time. That had to be the real thing, right?
Lena shrugged. âTheir brains were really good at making them think that.â
âSo what I doâwhat all matchmakers doâis a joke?â Marcus cried. He never thought heâd be yelling at the girl he had a crush on, but he couldnât stop himself.
Lena seemed to think his question through for a moment. âNo,â she finally said. âObviously, you take it really seriously. Itâsâ¦itâs not for me, okay? So the sooner we figure out how to reverse this whole mix-up, the better.â
She clearly didnât want to argue anymore, and Marcus didnât either. He was pretty sure Grandpaâs book would strongly frown upon yelling at your date.
âI should go,â Lena said, heading back toward the park entrance.
âWhere are you going? Shouldnât we at least call the hospital and make sure Olivia is okay?â He reached into his pocket before remembering what had happened with Caspar. âOh. I donât have my phone with
