related. Iâll check and get the book back to you.â
âThanks,â said Alex. âAnything else to add, Simber?â
âNo, thank you.â
âAll right, then. Moving on. Brainstorming time. How can we get Gondoleery out of the palace alone?â
The group members thought.
âIs there a Purge coming up?â Carina asked. âThat would get her to the Commons.â
âNot for a while,â Florence said.
âWhat if . . . ?â Samheed said. âNo.â He fell back into his thoughts.
âShe must go out now and then,â Sky said. âDoes she still have a house in Quill? We might just have to keep watch for a few days and see if thereâs any pattern to her movements.â
Carina narrowed her eyes. âBut does she go anywhere without a driver? I doubt it.â
âLiam told me where to find her house in Quill,â Alex said. âBut he also told me that while there is sometimes glowing coming from the windows, it disappears if she answers the door, so we might not find anything there. Worth a look, though.â
âWhat if . . . ?â Samheed said again, eyes lighting up, but then he slumped. âNo.â
Everyone but Lani snickered at him.
Lani, who had been quiet all this time, closed her eyes. âHang on,â she murmured, then nodded sharply, as if sheâdjust figured out a very difficult equation. âIâve got it,â she said, eyelids flying open.
âTell us,â Alex prompted.
Lani gathered her thoughts a minute more, then began. âIf Gondoleery doesnât go anywhere on her own, Iâll simply disguise myself as one of her drivers. When she decides to go somewhere, Iâll drive her in this direction to the desolate area of Quill instead. You guys can be waiting, and weâll . . . weâll put an end to her reign right then and there,â she said. âNow,â she added, sitting up triumphantly, âknock some holes in that plan, why donât you.â
âSeriously?â Samheed asked.
âYes,â Lani said.
âWell, for starters, you donât know how to drive.â
Laniâs mouth fell open. âMinor detail. How hard can it be?â
âSecond,â Samheed continued, âhow will we know when youâre coming with her? Are we just supposed to lie in wait for days? How will we recognize you if youâre disguised as a driver?â
Laniâs chin shot up. âI donât . . . Wait. The gargoyles. Thatâs where Matilda comes in. Weâll have Charlie with us,and Matilda can let us know when Gondoleeryâs going to go somewhere. She can follow Gondoleery out the door, and Iâll sneak her into the back of the vehicle when Gondoleeryâs not looking. Then Alex can take Charlie through the tube and get to you, and youâll know precisely when Iâll be coming.â
Alex rubbed his chin, listening and thinking.
Samheedâs face turned skeptical. âOkay, but arenât most of her drivers men?â he asked.
âSo?â Lani replied. âWhen I said disguise, Iâm talking full-blown impersonation. Iâll become not just a man, but a specific man sheâd recognize.â
Sky looked up. âMaybe Liam could help. I bet he knows some of the drivers.â
âYes,â Lani said, growing even more excited. âYes, thatâs a great idea. He could help me with the disguise.â She looked from Alex to Florence for approval. âWhat do you think? I think we have something here. There are a few minor issues, but nothing we canât overcome.â
âI like it,â Carina said. âItâs not too complicated, and nobody else gets hurt.â
âItâs a little complicated, though,â Simber argued.
âYeah, like whenLani crashes a vehicle she doesnât know how to drive,â Samheed said.
Sky elbowed him.
