he said, pointing to his friends.
âBut wonât we look conspicuous with our orange eyes and scars?â Lani asked.
âCome on,â Alex said. âYouâre all magesâwell, Sky not so much, but weâll help her, and sheâs creative. Canât you each come up with a disguise? Think back to Will Blairâs days.â
âHey,â Samheed muttered. âTake it easy.â
âOh, I see,â Lani teased. âYou want us to disguise ourselves as Aaron and take over?â
âUm, no, please,â Alex said. âThat plan didnât really workout well for Will, did it? I want you to look like ordinary Quillens walking around, which shouldnât be hard to do. Most of you have done it before.â
Sky looked bemused and a bit uncomfortable. She was beginning to wonder what use she could be. âYou could paint me invisible,â she said.
âWhereâs the sport in that?â Samheed said. âBesides, the invisibility paintbrush spell doesnât last long enough, and wears off without warning. I donât even carry it anymore. Itâs a fun spell for goofing around, but not really meant for serious stuff.â
Alex gave Sky a reassuring smile. âDonât worry. Iâm sure Mr. Appleblossom has some costumes and can help you all with whatever magic you might need to keep you from being recognized.â
Florence glanced at Simber. âI still have my mask from the masquerade ball. Maybe I can be a part of this.â
âThatâll worrrk,â Simber said dryly. âNobody will suspect a thing.â
Alex grimaced. âIâm afraid you two will have to stay here. Youâre way too hard to disguise.â
Sky couldnât holdback her reservations any longer. âI donât do magic,â she said. âNot well, at least, and I donât know my way around Quill at all. Are you sure Iâm the right person for this?â
âOh, Quillâs easy,â Samheed told her. âItâs one big oval road around the perimeter of the island, with quadrants of houses inside.â He scratched his head. âAnyway, the palace is at the far west end. Just go left out of Artimé and follow the roadâyou canât miss it. Itâs the uninviting gray structure on the hill, with the crooked turret that sticks up quite high. Maybe you can stay on this half of the island so itâll be easier to find home again in case you get lost.â
âWill we be working all together or separated?â Lani asked.
âYouâll likely be together some of the time,â Alex said. âBut it depends on our approach. Letâs figure out our plan of attack, and then we can look at that.â
He addressed Sky specifically. âYes, Sky, to answer your question, you are right for this job. I want you as a lookout. Youâre stealthy, you can run fast, and youâre extremely cleverâyouâll be able to get yourself out of any situation easily. Thatâs why I chose you, okay? Donât worry about the magic. The rest of us will have it covered.â
Sky frowned. âOkay,â she said, still a bit dubious. âKeep going.â
Alex moved to continue, but before he could, Simber cleared his throat.
Everyone looked at him. After a moment, Alex realized the cat was waiting to be asked his opinion. He resisted the urge to roll his eyes. âSimber, what concerns do you have?â he said, only a little patronizingly.
Simber ignored the tone. âWe havenât seen evidence of it, but accorrrding to Liam, Gondoleerrry might have firrre powerrr of some kind. In a deserrrt land like Quill, that can be verrry dangerrrous.â
Alex nodded and waited to be sure the cat was done. âRight,â Alex said. âIâve been meaning to ask you, Laniâis there anything in that Element-ary book about fire?â
âI donât think so. Itâs more weather
