Kate said with a giggle.
âAunt Mollyâ¦exercises?â Uncle Ollie looked at them with a funny expression, as if he didnât quite believe them.
Aunt Molly giggled and lifted a fork. âLike this.â Opening her mouth, she pretended to eat. âI exercise my jaw.â She closed her mouth and everyone laughed.
âI hope Iâm as funny as you when Iâmâ¦â Kate stopped before finishing.
âWhen youâre old, honey?â Aunt Molly laughed. âItâs okay to say it. Iâm no spring chicken.â
âDid someone say something about old people in here?â Kateâs father entered the room, yawning. âIâm feeling old and stiff. These cold mornings are really getting to me!â
âI could use a cup of coffee, myself,â Kateâs mother said, entering the room behind him. âGood morning, everyone!â
âGood morning, Mom.â Kate reached over and gave her mom a huge hug. âWe were just talkingâ¦â
âAbout me being old,â Aunt Molly threw in. âBut thatâs okay. I donât mind admitting it. Maybe I donât work out as often as I should, and maybe I canât ski like I used to when I was young, but I can certainly pay the entrance fee for Sydney to do so.â
âWâwhat?â Sydney gave her a surprised look.
âThatâs right. I paid the twenty-five dollar entrance fee for you this morning,â Aunt Molly said. âI prayed about it last night and felt a little nudge from the Lord to do it. Hope you donât mind.â
âMind? Mind? Oh, Aunt Molly!â Sydney threw her arms around Kateâs aunt and gave her a warm hug. âOf course I donât mind! How can I ever thank you? My mom will be so grateful!â
âJust go out there and ski the best youâve ever skied.â Aunt Molly patted Sydney on the back. âBut take care of yourself. Itâs cold out and youâll be in unfamiliar territory.â
âWhere do we go?â Sydney asked. âWhereâs the best skiing around here?â
âYou need to ski the Rat,â Uncle Ollie explained. âThatâs where the competition will take place, and itâs great for skiers at every level.â
âTheâ¦what?â Sydney looked stunned.
âThe Rat,â he repeated. âThatâs the name of the most famous ski run around these parts.â
âOoo!â Sydney let out a grunt. âWhy did they have to name it
The Rat?
Of all things!â
Uncle Ollie laughed. âI see your point. But donât let the name stop you. Itâs a great ski run. And if you make it from the top to bottom without falling, they give you a T-shirt.â He went into another room and returned a few minutes later with a brown T-shirt in his hand. âI got this one back in the eighties when my ski legs were still strong.â
âWow.â Kate laughed as she looked at the shirt that said T HE R AT P ACK on the front. âThatâs really cool, Uncle Ollie.â
He turned it around and showed them the picture of the rat on the back.
Sydney shuddered. âI never dreamed when I said Iâd compete that Iâd have to ski onâ¦a rat!â
âItâs just a name, honey,â Aunt Molly said. âAnd besides, youâll never overcome your fear of rats without facing it head-on. So, if youâre going to teach Kate to ski, the Rat is the perfect place.â
Kate shook her head. âNo thank you. No skiing for me, thanks. Iâll just hang out here and work on my super-sleuth blogsite.â
âOh, come on, Kate,â Sydney implored. âIf I can overcome my fear of rats, you can overcome your fear of skiing! And you can work on the blogsite anytime! Weâre on vacation now!â
âIâve been a member of the Rat Pack for years,â Uncle Ollie added. âWeâve got to keep the tradition going in our
