her mind. Had she seen a different world, a different universe? Certainly she had seen a different hallway, a different house, a different husband and a child she had never had. What was she seeing? Was it madness or something more? She leaned forward again, desperate to hear more.

“Some of us quantum physicists … the radical ones,” he added smiling, “Are now saying that multiple versions of you exist doing different things in an infinite number of universes. This is happening, has happened and will happen forever. The universe of pure potentiality - at the quantum level and at the human level.”   He paused then continued, “I know this is a lot to take in. And this is before we even talk about time travel. Let’s take a quick tea break and then resume.”

The audience members stood up. Some stretched, some immediately started walking over to Dr Priestley, eager to speak to him. But when Christine looked   at him she saw he was staring right back at her. He whispered something to the woman talking to him and came over to Christine. He took her hand.

    “Are you Chris?”

“Yes,” she said uncertainly, “But I don’t think we’ve met before.”

“No. Matt described you to me though. He said you might come.   I hoped you would. We need to speak. Not now I know. Can you ring my office and make an appointment to come and see me this week? It’s very important.”

She hesitated. Did he know what was happening to her? If there was a chance he did then she had to say yes. She had no choice. “Yes I’d like to,” she said eventually.

“Good. We really do have a lot to talk about. But right now I need to finish this lecture. I hope you can stay?”

“No I’m afraid I’m meeting my husband Damien. I wish I could though.”

“Ah well, never mind. We will talk when we meet up properly.” He smiled at her and then turned and walked away. Christine stood there for a moment, uncertain what to think about everything he had said. But then she heard her phone buzz in her bag. She picked it up to answer Damien's call.

  CHAPTER EIGHT

That day she dressed carefully for work, more carefully than usual. She put on her favourite pair of black trousers, trousers that fitted her in a flattering way. Her black jumper had a cleavage that was not too revealing but lower cut than normal. And she applied a little more make up than usual – a hint of eggshell blue around her eyes, her favourite lipstick, a touch of blusher.

“You look beautiful,” said Damien when she came down the stairs. She immediately felt guilty.

“I’ve just put some make up on that’s all,” she said, “I thought I was looking a bit pale.”

“Well we had a late night so I’m not surprised,” said Damien, giving her a hug before going to the kitchen to make their breakfast.

They ate in silence, as usual. Christine would normally use this time to plan the day ahead while Damien watched Sky Sports News. However, today her thoughts were racing. What would happen at lunch? What would Matt say? And what about the lecture last night? What had that meant?

In the pub after the lecture she had told Damien where she had been. What’s the harm in that, she had thought. She didn’t have to tell him about all the strange things that had been happening after all. And she was getting tired of all the secrets she was keeping from him. It was exhausting. She had always been able to tell Damien everything. And now something new that she didn’t understand had come into their lives and changed everything.

So she had told him about almost walking past the church, seeing the notice on the door and going in to listen.

“You’ve never been into religion before,” he remarked, finishing his glass of wine and starting to pour them another. She had been waiting for him to top up their glasses for some time.

“Yes I have. I did it at A level,” she reminded him. “And anyway it was mostly physics not
