fingers through his wet hair and when he moved his face to hers, she accepted a slow sensual kiss. He broke the embrace and stared into her eyes, grazing his fingertips over her cheek. “I love you, baby.”
Meg smiled, “I love you too.”
He climbed to his feet and pulled her to join him before wrapping his arms around her, holding her tight. She could hear his heart racing as she rested her head on his chest. They might have made a new life. She might be cradling a tiny Sam inside her. The thought made her snuggle closer against him. God, she was clucky. When did that happen?
His voice rumbled. “We can’t do this again. We took a stupid risk. You need see a doctor and go on the pill.”
Her heart sank to her feet, and she pulled back and stared.

Chapter Ten
The minute the words left Sam’s mouth he wanted to take them back. Meg’s bottom lip quivered and her eyes filled with tears. He’d ruined their first uninterrupted romantic interlude in weeks with a thoughtless comment, not that he didn’t mean what he said. Since finally winning Meg’s trust and convincing her he wanted to pleasure her over and over and over, and then declaring his love for her, they had barely had a minute alone. Maud’s arrival had put the kibosh on their relationship developing much further. He had no doubt where he wanted things to go, and babies were definitely on the agenda, but not right now, not before they had a chance to explore each other and their new relationship.
    “Meg?”
She shifted her gaze to him, her eyes still moist with tears.
    “I never meant…”
With a shrug, she pushed away from him. “Everything’s fine. I need to get going. Maud will be wondering where I went.”
Sam grabbed her arm and pulled her back to him. “You’re not running out on this.”
A thump at the door ended the conversation. Lance’s high pitched frantic voice echoed through the thin timber. “Sam, are you in there? I need to find Meg. Maud’s had an accident.”
Meg looked up at Sam. “I should go.”
He’d fucked up big style and he knew Meg would dwell on what he’d said and misconstrue the whole thing. Not wanting kids now would become not wanting her long term. No doubt her brain would have twisted that into he didn’t find her attractive within an hour.
Another thud fell on the door followed by a plaintive wail. “Sam?”
Sam dropped a soft kiss on Meg’s lips. “Don’t you dare take what I said out of context. We’ll discuss this at home later. I love you. Okay?”
Meg gave him a shaky smile. “I love you too.”
    “Promise not to twist things?”
    “I’ll try.”
He kissed her again. “That’s my girl. Now you better go and find out what havoc Maud is causing to have poor Lance squealing like a prepubescent teenager.”
Sam wrapped a towel around his hips and opened the door a crack to find Lance wringing his hands. His face flooded with relief. “Thank God. Where’s Meg?”
    “Why? What happened?”
“I think Maud overdid things. I wanted to call an ambulance but she won’t let me.”
“Is she in the main gym?”
    Lance nodded furiously.
“Meg will be with you in a minute.”
Lance tried to peek through the gap in the door. “Is she with you?”
Sam grinned. “I said she’ll be there. Now run along.”
By the time he turned around Meg was fully dressed and shoving her feet into her runners. He stepped back and as she made her way to the door, he halted her progress with his arm.
“Just so you know. I don’t regret a minute of anything we’ve done. Not even in the last half an hour.”
Meg smiled. “Not even the time my mother almost caught me giving you a blow job?”
Sam shuddered at the memory. “That I regret, and your dad finding me making love to you in your mum’s kitchen.”
When she giggled he couldn’t stop a grin from curling up his lips. “See you at home later.”
She nodded and dropped a kiss on his mouth. Lips barely touching she whispered, “I love you,
