and clean. There was a queen sized bed covered with white fresh sheets and a quilted plaid blanket. A dark wood entertainment center was in front of the bed, and a plaid green and blue chair was in the corner. A round dark wood table sat next to a chair by a tiny window, and a huge picture of painted orchids hung above the bed. The only problem was the damp and musty smell.
â€œWell, this is a surprise,” Nokea said. She walked off to look in the bathroom and said it was just as tidy as the rest of the place.
â€œAll I can say is make yourself at home for the night. You can have the bed and I’ll sleep in the chair. Before we do anything else, please call Jaylin to let him know what’s up.”
â€œI’ll call him in the morning. I’m too tired to argue with him again.”
Earlier, when I had gotten my spare tire from the trunk, Scorpio had called. I sat on the bed to return her call from my cell phone.
â€œHey baby,” I said. “Sorry I missed your call, but I caught a flat tire and was in the middle of trying to change it.”
â€œHow’d you get a flat tire? Did you get it fixed?”
â€œI must have hit something on the road. I haven’t gotten it fixed yet, but I will get it fixed in the morning. Nokea and I are staying the night at a motel.”
â€œReally?” she sounded shocked. “I hope the two of you have separate rooms.”
â€œYeah, baby, we got separate rooms, and if we didn’t, you know she’s a married woman and I’m soon to be married.”
Scorpio laughed. “You are so, so good. Soon to be married my butt. I had a feeling that something would happen. I’ve been worried about you. Be careful, okay? Get some rest and hurry back home.”
â€œYou know I will. Stay sweet and I’ll call you in the morning.”
Scorpio and I ended our call and Nokea stared at me again.
â€œI already know what you’re thinking,” I said.
â€œWhy Shane? Why must men lie so much? Scorpio knows that you and I don’t have anything going on, so was it necessary for you to tell her we had separate rooms?”
â€œIn an effort to protect her feelings, yes. If I had told her we were spending the night in the same room that would have caused major problems.”
â€œNo, if you had been honest with her, she would have known that you had nothing to hide. By the look on your face, I can see that this conversation isn’t going anywhere so I’m going to leave well enough alone.”
â€œThank you. I will feel so much better if you would call your husband and tell him what’s up. If you don’t call him, I will.”
â€œShane, please stay out of my business. I said I will call him in the morning and I promise you that I will.”
â€œAll right,” I said, making my way to the bathroom. “I’m taking a shower. Before you get in the bed, if you wouldn’t mind tossing the covers or quilt in the chair, I’d appreciate it.”
â€œYou can have the quilt. The sheets will work for me and I’ll be kind enough to give you a pillow.”
â€œThanks,” I said, closing the door.
Tired, I took a rush shower and dried myself with a white towel. I wrapped the towel around my waist and opened the bathroom door. Nokea was laying on her side and had already fallen asleep. She still had on her jeans, but had removed her jacket and shirt. With her lace turquoise bra on, she was snoring her butt off.
I shook my head and made my way to the chair. It was comfortable and I had no problem snuggling up with the quilt and falling asleep.
    Â
    Â
I was awakened by a knock at the door. Nokea woke up too and we both looked at each other. I got up and when I looked through the peephole, the officer was standing outside.
    â€œWho is it?” Nokea whispered.
â€œIt’s the officer who brought us here.”
â€œWell, open the door. He might want to tell you something
