MEL
I am Nicholas and I met Mel when we were young kids. I was in the same class as Tony, her brother and we lived close to each other so I was always over at his house and vice versa. She was much older than us so I really did not know her all the well back then. She was just my friend’s big sister. She was always serious and that has not changed much.
I used to watch her, she was just focused on her future and how she was going to achieve her goals. It was no big shocker to us or our families that she was the one who ended up with a PhD. and a budding career while Tony and I got regular mundane jobs. Soon we found significant others and we were not that close anymore. Tony and I still kept in touch from time to time. After I got into a bad patch in my marriage we got closer again.
We were all in our thirties now and we were pretty much where we were going to be career wise. Mel was running her own pharmaceutical company and she was doing groundbreaking research. Tony was a supervisor in an auto parts company and I was a sales person in medical supplies. Tony and I were earning just enough to pay our bills and eat. Mel was rich and getting richer.
A lot of people say that money is not everything but I can honestly say that it applied to Mel. The last time I saw her she spoke of her marriage. It was more than on the rocks and they were getting a divorce where she was fighting to keep everything she had worked hard for. She had left her husband’s house to stay with her brother and his wife Lisa. She said it would be for a couple of weeks but it seemed as if she was not going to move at all. She was supposed to be looking for a new home. She was clearly not recovering well from what was happening to her. She was even more serious now, extremely quiet and hardly went anywhere. I suppose she felt a bit weird staying with her younger brother. If anything it should be the other way around.
It was also the general assumption that she was not as consumed with sex as her brother and I were. It was probably all the way down on her list of important things to do. We all wondered if that had affected her marriage. It might be that she spent way too much time focused on her company and her research and not on her husband.
HER SECRET DESIRE
One day I headed over to Tony's house as usual. I was there to get him so we could go play pool. I didn't see his car but I thought nothing of it. I went and rang the doorbell and his sister answered.
"Oh hello Nicholas; I can see someone forgot to give you some info."
"I guess so. What was I to hear?"
"He is not here. He had to go to work. The other supervisor fell ill. He was the next one up."
"That sucks!"
"Well, don't worry too much about it. Come on in, I have a fresh pot of coffee on. Lisa is out as well. You can keep me company."
I was to be her entertainment for the evening. Well, I knew I would learn something new, if nothing else. I really was not bothered by Mel. She was a good soul. She just tended to come off as being cold to those who didn't really know her. She was not a bad looking woman either.
She was about 5'10". She had a relatively curly figure and had raven black hair and brown eyes. Her hair was just above her shoulders now. She changed her hairstyles quite frequently. She also dressed the part. She always looked like she was heading to a very important meeting with other CEOs. Tailored suits were the order of her day. I guess it could be understood why she was so intimidating to many.
We sat and had a hearty conversation. We spoke on a variety of topics, sticking to none in particular. We spoke of world affairs and human rights and what could be done to change things. I looked at her as we spoke. She was in a much better place today. She seemed to actually be happy. We finished the coffee and I followed her to the kitchen so she could clean up. She was like that. We continued to chat there.
Strange enough what we were talking about changed from the
