back the notebook. âThat tends to freak people out.â
She laughed. âThanks, Alexis. And if you wouldnât mind â¦â Emily bowed her head.
âThis conversation never happened,â I said. âNot that anybody would ever believe that Iâd given love advice.â
âGood.â Now the usual bounce returned to both Emilyâs step and ponytail. âHey, so you looked kind of sick when you left my stepmomâs office yesterday. Are you okay?â
I shrugged. âAside from the night terrors and vomiting? Yes.â
âAlexis!â
âIâm kidding. But are the classes always so intense?â Emily squinted thoughtfully. âIf by intense, you mean fabulous and awesomeââ
âI donât.â
She acted as if she didnât hear me. âThen yes. Tonightâs will be just as intense. My stepmom is very passionate about what she does.â
I nodded. âLike a cult leader.â
Emily frowned. âThatâs not funny.â
âSorry,â I said.
We reached the school and I hesitated at the entrance. To sign up for clubs, Iâd have to visit the counselorâs office. Ms.Dorf had been waiting there to talk family issues since Iâd started junior high.
âHey!â I said brightly to Emily. âYou know what would be fun? Going to the counselorâs office together.â
Ms. Dorf couldnât possibly expect me to discuss personal issues in front of someone else. I linked my arm through Emilyâs the way Iâd seen girls do with friends.
âUm, okay,â she said. âBut why?â
âIâm joining some clubs. You know, to work on my âsocial skills.ââ I put the words in air quotes.
Oddly enough, that seemed genuinely exciting to her. Emily beamed and jerked me into a fast walk. âWhich clubs?â
I shrugged. âWhichever ones meet today.â
She slowed a little to look at me. âYouâre joking.â
âIf I had a choice, I wouldnât be doing this at all,â I said. âBut apparently going to Chloeâs party isnât enough of a social effort. Not even if I braid everyoneâs hair.â
âYouâre going to the slumber party?â Emily clutched my arm, a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth.
I was kind of afraid to say yes in case she dismembered me in her excitement, but when I didnât respond, she almost pulled my arm out of its socket anyway.
âAre you?â she asked.
âOw! Yes!â
Emily squealed and threw her arms around me. âWeâre going to have so much fun at Chloeâs!â
I patted her shoulder. âIf she has firecrackers and an old toilet, weâll certainly try.â
Emily freed herself and knocked on the door to the counselorâs office.
Ms. Dorf poked her head out. âHello, Emily!â She turned to me with confusion. âAnd Alexis. What a nice surprise! Are you here to â¦â She paused. âWhat can I do for you?â
âIâm not here to talk about my mom, first of all,â I said. âSheâs not a part of my life anymore.â
Ms. Dorf smiled gently. âOh, I think your momâs a bigger part of your life than you realize.â
I shook my head. âWhatever. Iâm here for extracurriculars. Can you help me?â
âOf course.â Ms. Dorf pulled the door open.
While Emily and I sat, Ms. Dorf grabbed a list of school clubs off her desk. âI have to say, Iâm pleased to finally see you taking an interest in social activities, Alexis. What are you considering?â
âHow about â¦â I closed my eyes and stabbed randomly at the paper. When I pulled back my finger to reveal my selection, I said, âFrench club.â
Ms. Dorf looked slightly less pleased. âI really hope you donât make all of your decisions that way.â
âNo, usually thereâs a dartboard
