involved,â I said.
Emily kicked me and forced herself to laugh. âSheâs just fooling around, Ms. Dorf. Alexis was telling me sheâs actually interested in â¦â Emilyâs eyes skipped down the page, then back up to Ms. Dorf. âIn robotics club.â
âRight,â I said. âAnd the ⦠hockey boosters.â
Emily curled her lip. âReally?â
I shrugged. âViolence on ice. Whatâs not to love?â
Ms. Dorf leaned toward me. âAlexis, I know I havenât seen you much, but I donât think those clubs are right for you. Are you sure thereâs nothing else youâd rather try?â
When she saw me close my eyes and point my finger again, she stopped me. âAll right. Robotics club meets after school, but hockey boosters meet during study hall, so Iâll have to give you a pass for that.â
âGreat!â I said. âI bet Iâll love it.â
Chapter 5
I t was a good thing I didnât actually put money on that bet. When I got to the hockey boosters meeting, the room was filled with giggling girls, loud pop music, and the stench of wet paint.
There was no ice, no violence. There werenât even any missing teeth strewn about.
âUm, hello?â I called.
The girls glanced up, but only one of them actually came over.
Chloe Stroupe.
âHey, Alex! Are you looking for someone?â she asked.
âActually, Iâm here to join the boosters,â I said, thrusting a piece of paper at her. âWill you sign this as proof I came?â
Chloe didnât move. â Youâre joining the boosters?â
âSure.â I shrugged. âI like hockey and I figured itâd be nice to meet some other, uh, fans.â I wondered if that was even the right word. Several of the girls were now singing into the hockey sticks like microphones, my slumber party nightmare come true.
Chloe crossed her arms and smirked. âAnd this wouldnât have anything to do with Champs?â
I sighed and pulled back my paper. âEmily got to you first, huh?â
Chloe laughed. âShe didnât tell me. I get the Champs newsletter.â
My eyebrows rose a little. The newsletter wasnât a surprise. I wouldnât have put it past Ms. Success to write her announcements in nightly fireworks. But the fact that anyone at school besides Emily would ever go to that classâ¦.
âYouâre in Champs too?â I asked.
Chloe nodded. âYou know me. Iâm in it to win it. Plus, my parents want me to get into a good college some day. Hey!â She bumped my arm. âDo you have a team for the Champs Championship?â
âOh! Um, I hadnât even thought about it,â I said. âBut I doubt my brothers want me on theirs. So ⦠no.â
âYouâll be on my team then,â she said confidently. âYouâre a pretty good athlete ⦠when youâre not playingbadminton. And I really want that thousand dollars.â
âOkay,â I said with a shrug. âSounds like a plan.â
âGreat! Itâll be you, me, and ⦠hopefully Trevor .â She sighed and took on a wistful expression.
âTrevor?â My ears pricked up, but I tried to act nonchalant. âWhoâs Trevor?â
âJust this really cute guy in our class.â She pressed her hands to her heart and smiled blissfully. âI am sooo crushing on him.â
This had disaster written all over it.
âYou know you shouldnât let feelings cloud your judgment,â I said.
Chloeâs dreamy expression vanished. âNice message. Is that from an anti -Valentine card?â
âActually, my mom â¦â I paused, remembering what Ms. Dorf had said earlier. I shook her words out of my head. âEmotions are a distraction from reaching your goals.â
âBut Trevorâs such a cute distraction,â said Chloe with a sigh. Any second, little
