Chapter 8

I awoke to the sound of heated voices.

My eyes opened into thin slits and harsh sunlight assaulted me. The front door was open just a crack, and I could see Red and Grim outside having an intense conversation.

“No fucking way,” Red said. “People are going to die.”

“Yeah, their people,” Grim said. “Not ours.”

“You can’t know that. You can’t promise that.”

“No,” Grim said. “But I’m not running anymore. This shit has to end. Come on, I know you want revenge as much as I do. Or have you forgotten about Elise already?”

Red grabbed Grim’s arms in his fists and lifted him in the air, which was no small feat considering Grim’s size.

“Don’t you ever fucking say that,” Red growled, spit flying from between his lips. “You know I loved her.”

“I loved her, too. She was my sister, and those fucking Blood Riders stole her from me. They stole her from you, too.”

Red let go of Grim and turned away.

“Let’s finish this,” Grim said. “Once and for all. Just me and you.”

    “No,” Red said.

“I’m doing this, with or without your help.”

“No, I mean we can’t do this alone. This is a club decision. Have you talked to Edgar?”

“Not yet. I wanted to talk to you first.”

“He’ll never agree to this,” Red said, running a hand through his hair.

“He will if you have my back. Do you? Do you have my back?”

Red straightened up to his full height, looking menacing and dangerous. “Absolutely.”

The two men shook hands. The serious looks on their faces made it seem like they were agreeing to some kind of blood oath. From the sound of their conversation, that might not be too far from the truth.

“I’ll get the council together,” Grim said.

    “I’ll meet you there.”

Grim nodded and walked away towards the warehouse. Red came back into the room and saw that I was awake.

“Good morning,” he said, a strained smile breaking through the determined look on his face.

“Is it?” I asked. “It sounds like something’s wrong.”

Red sighed. “Don’t worry about it right now. But I need to ask you something.”

I sat up in bed, pulling the bed sheet up over my naked breasts. “Anything.”

“I need you to leave,” he said.

“What? No. I want to stay here with you.”

He shook his head. “It’s best if you go back to your husband.”

I grabbed onto his arm. “Did I do something wrong? Is it because of last night?”

He looked away from me and stared out the window. “What are you doing here?” he asked, ignoring my question.

“What do you mean?” I asked, my voice trembling.

“Is this just a quick fling and a big ‘fuck you’ to your husband? Is that why you’re here?”

I thought about it for second. “No,” I said finally. “This has nothing to do with him. Not anymore.”

“So then why do you want to stay? To be with me? To be with Grim?”

“Maybe,” I said. “I’m still trying to figure things out.”

“Well, just so you know, if you want to be with me, you have to be with me. Just me.”

“But you said it was okay last night,” I said, almost in tears at disappointing him.

“Last night, it was okay. Last night was just fun. But if you want something more than fun, you have to choose. It’s me or Grim. If he’s the one you want, I won’t stop you. I won’t let this come between me and him. But if it’s me, it has to just be me.”

I wanted to say that the only man I wanted to be with was him. But Grim’s warning from the night before flashed into my head. Was Red dangerous? Should I be careful about getting too close to him? I felt like I needed to get to know him better before I could say for sure.

“I don’t know, Red, this is all happening so fast.”
