think itâs so stupid, then why are we doing it?â I asked.
Goat sighed and laid the mass of papers against his leg. He turned to Jack. âWould you like to hear what Iâve come up with?â
âSure, man,â Jack said.
âAll right, I was reading the scriptââ said Goat.
âWhat script?â I said.
Goat turned to me and said very slowly, âThe movie script.â
I hadnât read a script. I didnât even know there was one. âWhy do you have it?â
âI asked for it,â Goat said. âWe need to have competitions that have something to do with the actual film, right? So I figured Iâd read the script and see what whoever becomes the stunt double will have to do.â
âYou can have a copy as well, Casey,â Jack said. âYou just never asked. I was telling my agent about Goat, and he had no problem sending a script over. Iâm sure he would do the same for you.â
Great, I thought. Now Jackâs been talking to his agent about Goat. âSure, send me the script,â I said.
âAll right, so thereâs this old-school scene near the end of the script,â said Goat. âItâs a downhill.â
âYeah,â Jack said. âThatâs a throwback to old skate films. What do you think?â
âI love it,â Goat said. âAnd it got me thinking we should have a competition like that.â
âLike what?â I asked.
âA downhill.â Goat held the script out. âIn here, it says the skaters ride long boards.â
âYeah, thatâs right,â Jack said. âIâve never been on a long board.â
âTheyâre like normal skateboards, only longer, and the wheels are bigger,â I said. âYou can go way faster on them.â Goat liked long boards. I could ride one, but they werenât really my thing.
âIs there somewhere around here you guys could do a downhill run on long boards?â Jack asked. He smiled and brushed his floppy hair out of his face.
âBeacon Hill,â Goat said.
I shook my head immediately. âNo way, Goat.â
âWhat?â Jack said. âWhat is Beacon Hill?â
âItâs this road thatâs only open in the winter,â I said. âItâs just for trucks and plows to get up the mountain during ski season.â
âA kid died skating down it last year,â Sara said. âSkateboarding on it is banned now.â
âSure, sure,â Goat said. âSkateboarders are banned from everywhere. Who will know? Itâs not as if anyone lives on the road or even drives on it.â
âHow do you get up there?â Jack asked.
âThereâs another road that cuts across the top of the mountain. You can walk to Beacon Hill from it,â I said.
âIs it really that dangerous?â Jack asked.
âYes,â I said.
âItâs all right if you know what youâre doing,â Goat said.
I did not want to ride Beacon Hill. I had heard of skaters going fifty or sixty miles an hour down it. Thereâs no way to control yourself at that kind of speed.
âWell, a stunt like this is going to be in the movie,â Jack said.
âExactly,â Goat said.
Jack looked at me. âSo, you would have to be able to do it for that, Casey. I mean, if youâre going to be my stunt double and all.â
âExactly!â Goat said again.
âWhat do you think, Casey?â said Jack.
I shook my head. âItâs dangerous, Jack. Really dangerous.â
âDonât think you can handle it?â Goat said.
âNo, I can handle it. Itâs justâ¦â
âPerfect. All right. How about we meet here tonight,â said Goat. âSay around seven? I can drive us to the top of Beacon Hill, and Jack can leave his car at the bottom.â
âSure,â Jack said.
âIâll bring a bike you can ride down behind us,â Goat
