He tossed his hat into the air but it didnât come back down.
Eduardo leaned over toward them. âSorry to break it to you, city boys, but youâll have to find some other talent. Nobody leaves the tribe.â In his talons was Nicoâs bottle-cap hat. âOh, and no human things in the jungle. Understood?â He flew off holding the hat.
âWhat?â Pedro said, upset. âWhatâs his problem?â
Nico slumped. âI feel naked.â
Â
âWe coulda been legends,â Pedro said, dejected. âI mean, we already are super mega dope, but you know what Iâm saying?â
âWe had it all,â Nico picked up where Pedro had left off. âThe undiscovered talent, the big idea. The inspiration. But if we canât bring these guys to Rio, we got nothing.â
âNothing? Hold your mangoes,â Rafael said. âWe still have Eva.â
Nico and Pedro exchanged glances.
âWhat?â Rafael prompted.
Carla hurried over. âGuys, this jungle is huge. I bet we can find loads of untapped talent, if we just scout a little.â
âWe?â Nico repeated
âWhat you talkinâ about, w e ?â Pedro said, frowning. âYou speak French?â
Carla gave it to them straight. âNo offense guys, but youâre kinda old. And letâs face it, I know the youth market.â
Nico let out a low whistle. âOooh, dude, you just got dissed,â he told Pedro.
Pedro balked. âShe was talking to you. Iâm all youth. I swim in the fountain.â
On the dance floor, Roberto and Jewel were finally taking a break. âWow, you still got the moves, Ju-Ju,â Roberto said as they flew over to Blu.
âOh my gosh, I havenât danced like that in forever!â she gushed. âSeriously? When is the last time I had this much fun?â
âUm, New Yearâs, maybe?â Blu tried. âJust putting it out there.â
Jewel wasnât picking up the hint. âOh, Iâm so exhausted.â
âYeah, we should get some rest,â Blu spoke up. âFind a local inn or B and B nearby.â
âStop, stop, stop. What is this crazy talk?â Roberto cut in. âNo, you guys are staying in my nest. Iâm on patrol tonight. Mi casa es su casa .â
Jewel looked up at Roberto, obviously touched. âThatâs really nice, Beto.â
âThank you, but weâre fine,â Blu said, hating that plan. âBesides, our whole family couldnât possibly fit in your bachelor pad.â
But it turned out that Robertoâs âbachelor padâ was a palace.
âWhoa,â Blu said, the word echoing in the cavernous space. He and Jewel stood in the atrium, gazing around Robertoâs stylish, gigantic nest.
âReal estate must be pretty cheap around here,â Blu mumbled.
âWow,â Jewel said, her eyes shining. âThis is incredible.â
Roberto played it down. âOh, this old nest. Itâs just something I put together last minute. With my own two wings, of course. And my strength. And my brawn. Iâm into landscaping.â
Tiago swooped in. âDad, itâs huge! It has six bedrooms! I get the big one!â
Carla swooped in next. âNo! Iâm the oldest.â
âOnly by three minutes, two point five seconds,â Bia countered.
âI had hoped to one day be blessed with a flock of little Robertos to call my own,â Roberto said by way of explanation. He smiled at Jewel, and Bluâs eyes narrowed.
âI bet you did,â he said thinly.
âNo way!â Tiago shouted. âA birdbath! Yeah!â He slid down a branch into the water, splashing Blu.
Roberto put his wing around Blu. âBlu, let me tell you something. If anything, and I mean anything, ever happens to you, I will take care of your family.â He smiled at all of them. âSleep well.â And then, as a clap of thunder sounded, he flew
