husband.
“Alexandra” she corrected me to Alex “Uhm, Alex, I do have to ask you one thing, and I hope you don’t take this the wrong way, but I do need to ask about your husband” I paused and mulled my ideas over in my head “Where exactly do you stand with him, and how are we going to make us work when you are married to another man”. I hoped that this didn’t offend her.
“That’s a… very valid… question” she said excruciatingly slowly, I hope she was not hurt “A couple of days ago I told him I wanted to leave him and he hit me” she lifted her coat from her chest and showed me a dark bruise on her side. Odd, I hadn’t noticed it last night. “And so I left.” She concluded abruptly.
“Oh, I see…” I didn’t know how to respond to such an atrocity.
“Needless to say, I have filed for divorce. The only problem is that as soon as my parents find out they will probably already have another man lined up for me.”
“And if I was in the picture?”
“Well then they’d make you marry me” she said stiffly.
“Ok!” I retorted with equal stiffness.
“Ok??” I could tell that my rebuttal shocked her a little.
    “Yes, Ok”
She walked to the window and stared at the white, lightly dusted ground. It had already stopped snowing but it was beautiful outside. Several long moments passed before she turned back to me.
“So you’re going to marry me? A woman you just met?” She seemed suspicious.
“I am going to need to wed at some point in my life, and the first girl that I ever have had feelings for seems like the best option” I said with a coy smile.
“Interesting” she said, and went back to the window.
I couldn’t tell if she was upset or if she was just scared. Maybe it was a mix of both. I really did have feelings for her, I just hoped she felt the same way and didn’t think that I was going too fast. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I would rather not practically propose to a woman I had just met the previous night, but what else was I supposed to do?
She smiled, as if she had a trick up her sleeve and merely said “ok!”
She went over to my bed and took one of the blueberry muffins. I opted for the carrot spice one, but soon realized that this was an error. Who in the name of God would put sunflower seeds in a carrot muffin? Rubbish! I poor us each a glass of milk and downed mine in a few seconds. She began to laugh which of course, in turn, made me choke on my last gulp of milk.
We began to speak about our future aspirations in terms of careers and family. She wanted two children, preferably a girl and a boy, or as she said one of each . She asked me how many kids I wanted and I honestly could not answer her question. I never even fathomed having to take care children, let alone have my very own. I said that two seemed reasonable and that it didn’t really bother me much in all honesty.
I couldn’t help but think how exactly the whole “divorcing my crazy-violent-husband thing” worked. I really wanted to ask her for more details but I didn’t want to pry. A knock on the door snapped me back to reality.
    “Léopold?” Called out Yvette.
    “Yes, Yvette.”
“Can I come een?” she asked and I turned over to Alexandra. She tightened my coat and nodded.
“Come in!” I chimed. She pushed through the door and stood at the edge of the bed.
“I’m appy you’re still ere! Alexandra, yor usband iz looking forr yew. Said dat Alexandra has paper to sign! Should I let heem in?” She looked worried.
“If you could, Yvette is it? Get the papers and I will sign them and give them back”
    “Yes, certainly.” She left.
“Well” started Alex “I suppose that after I sign the papers I will be freed from him and my parents will soon be on my back about it”
“If there’s anything I can do to make it easier for you, please let me know sweetheart” This nickname made her smile
