hands all over her. He then pulled her down as to kiss her mouth, and
Stacey saw a brilliant flash of red in his eyes as he did so. She kissed the
King back and then climbed onto the bed naked with him.
    Zane in the
corner meanwhile, had remained completely silent.
    The only
sound in the room was the kissing. Stacey felt herself becoming turned on by
all this, which was confusing as it was scary.  The King was guiding her hips
to meet with his, and she knew this would be followed by penetration. The
saliva in the King’s mouth was thick and sticky. She could feel it in her own
mouth. She could feel him entering her…
    But no.
    It was not to
be.
    Zane had
suddenly reacted and had pulled Stacey off the King with one arm, dragging her
into his chest. With the other he wielded his green sword, and before the King
could even sit up, he had sliced his head clean off.
    Stacey
uttered a scream, but Zane clasped a hand over her mouth to stifle it.
    “What did you
do?” Stacey said, breaking away from him. “I thought you agreed you were going
to share.”
    “I couldn’t
go through with it,” Zane said somberly. “I care too much for you.”
    Stacey moved
forward and wrapped her arms around him.
    He stared
down at her, almost in disbelief. Then he said: “I have changed so much about
who I am for you. I changed the destiny of this clan.”
    “What will
happen now?” Stacey asked.
    “You and I
must leave the Island tonight. We must go somewhere where the clan will never
find us. It’s the only way we be together. It’s the only way we can survive.”
    “I’m ready,”
Stacey said. “Let’s do it.”
    “Wait a
second first,” Zane said.
    “What is it?”
    He picked up
her discarded dress from the floor and handed it to her.
    “Put it on
for me,” Zane said.

    CHAPTER
TWENTY

    “You know what happens now.”
    The window to
the King’s chamber was wide open and the howling cold from the far away ocean
could be heard and felt from it. Stacey and Zane stood next to it, their hands
at each other’s sides, kissing as the moon and stars watched over them. For
Stacey, today had been a miraculous adventure, something that she’d dreamed
about, wished for, longed for, that she had never imagined would ever come
true. Staring into Zane’s eyes she was so at home, so at peace – she never
wanted to ever be apart from him.
    “I don’t know
what happens,” Stacey whispered. “I don’t know anything anymore.”
    “We’ll make
it,” Zane said. “We’ll make it if we try.”
    “I believe,
you,” Stacey said, kissing him.
    “And I
believe you.”
    They went to
the ledge of the window and climbed through it together.
    “When I say
three, jump with me.”
    Stacey looked
at her man and smiled.
     “One…”
    Stacey
thought about the people who’d be after her.
    “Two…”
    Stacey
thought about the dragons who’d be after Zane.
    “Three…”
    On three they
both jumped out into the night, and before Stacey hit the ground, there was
something there to catch her.
    Their
adventure was not over.

PART TWO

    CHAPTER ONE

Deep night. Tiny lights, both above
and below. Her arms and legs wrapped around the back of her magnificent flying
beast, for the second time. Stacey Caversham’s destination was the city
mainland, and Firebound Island far behind them. She recalled the past afternoon
whereby she had come to the island by helicopter, and even with all those
chains and straps, she still hadn’t felt completely safe. One wrong turn, one
false move, and gravity would yank Stacey back to the ground. If she fell off
Zane’s body now, she would just be a dark blip in the space above the ocean for
a matter of seconds. The waves would splash briefly, and then it would be as
though she had never existed. She supposed that she should be even more afraid
of falling now – especially since it was on her mind – but in spite of that,
she actually did feel safe. Inside something else was making her
