uncomfortable, it feltâ¦exciting.
Once outside, cold air stung her face and cut through her layers, making her shiver. Steaming, fragrant coffee sounded better and better by the second.
Halfway down the block, Dakota still felt the tingle of interested attention. She couldnât resist looking over her shoulder.
All three big men stood in front of the gym, watching her departure. When she grinned at them, Gregor wavedâuntil Dean slugged him.
Now that sheâd seen them, they all went back inside. Huh. Maybe she hadnât been such a pain in the butt, after all. Maybe sheâd been a novelty instead.
And maybe Simon was as anxious to see her again as she was to see him. Dakota didnât know if thatâd be goodâor very, very bad.
S IMON didnât know he was grinning until Dean shook his head at him.
âWhat?â
âYou look moonstruck.â
Simon shrugged that off. âShe intrigues me, thatâs all.â
Gregor threw an arm over Simonâs shoulders, almost knocking him to the floor. âSorry, bud, but youâre traininâ and that means no nooky for you. You gotta save that juice for fightinâ.â
Simon laughed and shoved him away. âSo Jackiâs out of luck tonight, is that what youâre telling me?â
A slow smile spread over Gregorâs face. âJacki never takes no for an answer.â
âAnd thatâs more than enough on that subject,â Dean insisted, since Jacki was his little sister. âBut he is right, Simon. A brief fling is one thing, but you canât afford to get played by some skirt right now.â
âDakota wasnât wearing a skirt.â
âDakota?â
âDakota Dream.â
Gregor and Dean shared amused looks. Dean said, âWith a name like that, she sounds like aââ
âYeah, I know,â Simon cut in. âBut sheâs touchy about it, so donât tease her.â
Deanâs amusement turned to a scowl. âHow the hell do you know sheâs touchy?â
âI could tell.â
âI have a solution for you: No one can tease her if she doesnât hang around.â
âSheâs coming back tomorrow.â And Simon added, âSame bat time, same bat station.â
Dean ignored all that. âIf she shows up, you need to send her packing.â
âItâs a free world, Dean. Women can go wherever they want these days.â He smiled at his friend. âEven to your gym.â
Gregor said, âBut sheâll have to pay to stick around tomorrow.â
Simon nodded. âI know.â
âAnd thereâll be a lot more guys here then, too. Itâs always the busiest day. Crowded as hell. I thought weâd skip it.â
âI thought so, too,â Dean added.
Simon frowned. Fridays were always busy because a handful of veteran fighters made the trip to Deanâs gym, which meant that all the newer men also showed up to observe, listen, and learn.
It worked out well for all involved. The established fighters got to spar with fresh blood and bone up on new and varied techniques, and novices got the opportunity to get in some authentic practice.
âIâve decided to be here.â
Gregor and Dean studied him.
Simon didnât care what they thought, but still he said, âI figure I should get in as many days as I can before competing again.â
They studied him some more.
âHey,â Simon snapped, fed up with their awkward looks and insulting conjectureâeven if they were right. âYou two donât have to hang around if youâve got something better to do. I only plan to work out, not spar.â
To Simonâs chagrin, they both jumped on his excuse.
âEve would enjoy having me home for a full day for a change.â Dean barely smiled while saying that. âAnd Haggerty will be here to run the place. Itâs not like Iâm needed.â
âJacki will be thrilled
