to make sure he remained the majority shareholder.â
âRemind me what happened to Hawtrey,â Woodend said.
âHe died in a mountaineering accident up in the Lakes, a couple of years ago.â
âHow old was he when this happened?â
âIn his mid-fifties.â
Woodend sniffed. âSeems a bit long in the tooth to be buggerinâ about climbinâ mountains,â he said. âSo what happened to Alec Hawtreyâs shares after he died?â
âThey went to his widow, Thelma.â
âSo sheâs the one whoâs actually in charge?â
Paniatowski shook her head. âShe makes slightly more money out of the company than Pine did, but she doesnât take any active part in running it.â
âAnâ the business is healthy, is it?â
âMore than healthy. Itâs fighting fit. It posted record profits last year, and had to take on a lot of extra staff in order to meet demand.â
âYouâve done very well to come up with so much on the feller in such a short time, Monika,â Woodend said approvingly.
âThank you, but I canât really claim much personal credit for it,â Paniatowski told him. âI got most of the material out of his political manifesto.â
âSo now letâs get on to the really big questions,â Woodend suggested, taking a deep drag of his cigarette. âWhat was the motive behind Bradley Pineâs murder, and â perhaps even more importantly, in terms of openinâ up the investigation â why did the killer mutilate him once he was dead?â
The other two looked him blankly for a moment.
Then Paniatowski said, âIâve no idea. Iâve never come across a case of murder and mutilation before. Have you, sir?â
âOnly once,â Woodend told her. âIt was while I was at the Yard. The victim had been beaten to death, then his killers had cut off his genitals anâ stuffed them in his mouth.â
Beresford shuddered, and put his hand protectively â and instinctively â over his lap.
âDid you ever find out the reason for the castration?â Monika Paniatowski asked.
âI did. It turned out that the dead man had raped the sister of the two fellers who murdered him. I canât say I was entirely surprised by the result. I suspected it might be somethinâ like that right from the start, because what theyâd done made a twisted kind of sense, you see. But this is a different matter altogether. Whoever killed Pine smashed in his mouth anâ slit open his stomach. What kind of message was that meant to send?â
âSmashing in his mouth could have signified that he talked too much,â Paniatowski said.
âAnâ slittinâ open his stomach signified that he
ate
too much?â Woodend asked.
âProbably not,â Paniatowski agreed.
âI suppose that sex could have been involved,â Beresford suggested, tentatively.
âIn what way?â
âWell, Iâm not entirely sure,â admitted Beresford, who was still a virgin, but would have died rather than admit it to the other two. âMaybe he treated a woman very badly, and this was her revenge.â
âFair point,â Woodend agreed. âWhat have we found out about his love life so far, Monika?â
âNot a lot,â Paniatowski admitted. âThere hasnât been time. But we do know that he wasnât married, nor ever had been â which is quite unusual for a man in his late thirties.â
âAye, it is,â Woodend said. âIs there any indication that he might have been inclined the other way?â
âThereâs no record of him ever having been arrested for loitering outside public lavatories, if thatâs what you mean,â Paniatowski said.
âNot that that rules out the possibility of his beinâ homosexual,â Woodend said. âStill, thereâs no point in just
