reaches forward and grabs my hands, folding the key into the middle of my palm. “I said no when you asked if I wanted things to be like the way they are now. No, I didn’t want your mom to corner me and force me to go along with her plan for your future. No, I didn’t want you forced into moving in with me when I didn’t know if you wanted to or not. I don’t like things the way they are now. I wanted it to be different.”
“Me too,” I mumble. His words had just somehow managed to stitch together the broken pieces of my heart, but I’m still not wholly happy again. Things are still weird. “So why didn’t you just ask me to move in with you? Who cares what my mom thinks or wants?”
He glances at the card. “I was going to ask! I was waiting until our anniversary for obvious romantic reasons. Your mom just jumped the gun and I wasn’t going to ignore her. I kind of had no chance but to along with her.”
I lean forward and wrap my arms around his neck. His hands slide around my back and he pulls me onto his lap on the coffee table. “I love you Bayleigh. You are my entire life. I want to spend every single second with you.”
“ I want to spend every second with you,” I whisper while my head rests on his shoulder. “I’m sorry I ruined your anniversary present.”
“No worries.” His voice is peppy and a little cocky. I lean back and look at him just in time to see his sly smile. “We will have tons more anniversaries and you can’t possibly ruin them all.”
Chapter 9
The sun beats down on us from the top row of bleachers at Mixon Motocross Park. Becca pulls out her hair tie, throws her head back and gathers up all of her hair again piling it into a messy bun on the top of her head. “This place is so freaking hot. How do you put up with this?”
I hand her an opened water bottle from the cooler at my feet but she doesn’t grab it right away because she’s distracted by the shirtless guy in board shorts who makes his way up the bleachers. He stops halfway up and takes a seat to watch the races. “Never mind. Now I see how you deal with the heat.”
“Eh, that guy is a prick.” I skim the crowd for Jace who should be back any minute now with our nachos but I can’t find him. “There are tons of other hot guys here who would be worth dating.”
Becca fans her face with her hand. “Hook me up girl, damn.”
When Jace finally returns, balancing three orders of nachos in his hands, he has Hana Fisher with him. Before I ravenously dig into my nachos I make sure to introduce her to Becca since they’ve both heard so much about each other.
“Hana has something to tell you,” Jace says, grabbing one of the cheese-less chips out of my basket and eating it for me. The boy knows I hate the chips unless they’re drenched in gooey and delicious fake cheese product.
“What’s that?” I ask.
Hana’s excitement makes her bounce up and down where she sits. “So you know how my dad was having a pool built in his backyard? It’s finally done and Ash and I are throwing a huge pool party this Saturday. We want you to come. Becca, you should come too.”
“ Count me in,” Becca replies instantly, her eyes still on the shirtless hottie a few seats below us.
“That sounds great,” I say, right as realization hits me. I turn to Jace. “This Saturday is our…thing.” I don’t know how to end the sentence because we haven’t exactly made plans for our anniversary, we just know that we want to do something.
“ It’s up to you babe.”
I gnaw on my bottom lip. “The party sounds really fun…” Jace laughs and steals another one of my chips. “Then let’s go to the party. It’ll be more fun than a romantic dinner.”
My excitement for the pool party and our anniversary has me smiling on the whole drive back home where I plan on packing up as much of my things as I can fit into my car. I’m not officially moved in with Jace yet, but we both decided to make it a gradual
