Noodnik, approaching them.
âRight,â said Mallory. âFate forefend that you should reward him for risking life and limb on behalf of your store.â
âI'm glad we see eye-to-eye on that,â said Noodnik. âAs long as we're back here, can I sell you an apron? Only seventy-three dollars.â
âFor an apron?â said Mallory. âWhat the hell's it made of?â
âUnborn denim.â
âI'll pass on that.â
âOkay, how about a pair of size fourteen triple-A galoshes with your name inscribed on them?â
âMy name?â
âWell, if your friends call you Universal.â
âHow about just answering my questions?â
âWe'll get to that, but my function is to sell you.â
âWe'll get to it now, or I'm going to get my answers from Honest Sam.â
âYou really know how to hurt a guy,â complained Noodnik.
âOf course I do. I'm a trained detective. Now are you ready to answer?â
âAll right,â said Noodnik. âBut I'm writing you into the will in the morning.â
â Into the will?â
âSo I can write you out of it in the afternoon.â
âFine,â said Mallory. âDo you have any elephant-shaped chocolate marshmallow cookies?â
âNo.â
âDo you know who does?â
âNo. Now ask your questions.â
âI just did.â
âThat was it ?â said Noodnik. âThis whole case hinges on chocolate marshmallow cookies?â
âElephant-shaped ones.â
âYou'll have to give me a little time to see who makes them and who sells them.â
âHow much time?â
Noodnik shrugged. âI dunno. Maybe a couple of hours.â
âI'll check back with you then,â said Mallory, turning and walking toward the door as Felina and Jeeves fell into step behind him.
âYou sure this hasn't got anything to do with lewd women?â Noodnik called after him in plaintive tones.
âI'm sure.â
âNo one's ever going to write your adventures up in a book,â predicted Noodnik.
As they reached the street, Mallory turned to Jeeves.
âYour boss keeps referring to Fluffy as a fire-breather,â he said. âIs she?â
âAll dragons are.â
âThere's no sense just standing around while we're waiting for Noodnik to do his homework or for Winnifred to hunt up some leads,â said Mallory. âWhere would you take a stolen fire-breather where she couldn't burn her surroundings down?â
Suddenly Jeeves smiled. âI know just the place.â
C HAPTER 5
7:40 PM â8:47 PM
The gremlin led Mallory and Felina to the riverfront, then summoned a small launch.
âA boat ?â exclaimed Mallory. âWhere the hell are we going?â
âThe one place a dragon can't do any harm,â answered Jeeves. âI should have thought of it immediately. Most of the major dragon farms are there.â
âAre where ?â
âWhy, Fire Island, of course,â replied the gremlin.
They boarded the launch and it soon headed off toward their destination. Felina leaned over the water and stared at it, motionless. After perhaps a minute her hand darted out and came away with a small, squirming fish.
âI hope you're not going to eat that thing raw,â said Mallory.
âCertainly not,â said Felina.
âGood.â
âI'm going to play with it first.â
âNot on this boat, you aren't,â said Mallory.
âYou never let me have any fun,â she complained.
âOur definitions of fun vary considerably.â
âNot everyone likes movies of naked women,â said Felina.
âShut up and toss it back,â said Mallory.
âOh, all right,â she said, quickly biting off the head and tossing the rest of the fish into the water.
Jeeves uttered a plaintive whimper.
âIt's just a fish,â said Mallory.
âIt wasn't the fish,â responded
