them how he’d manage to get off. All Sarah knew was that Alex was here now, but he was no longer the rich kid from before. He was something new. Something savage lay under his gaze. Sarah saw a vein jump in his throat.  His strong jaw locked. His own black eyes glittered with hate.
Sarah reached out and took the hand that Alex had resting on his table. “It was a brave thing you did.” Alex turned his eyes towards her then. Sarah hadn’t been prepared for it. His look was intense. Her pulse quickened. She took back her hand. “I still remember that determined look on your face when you stood up, ready to defend our country. Not many men could have lived through what you’ve been through. We’re grateful for your service.” Sarah smiled. She’d been honest. Alex had done something she’d never thought he would. Impress her.
Alex was still looking at her, his look softened. He looked calm, but something seemed off. “How grateful are you?”
Sarah felt a hand slide up her bare thigh. She jumped back from her seat. Rachel looked at like she’d lost her mind. Alex smirked. Sarah placed her hands on her chest and just stared at him. Heat crept up her pale face.
“What’s the matter with you?” Rachel hissed. She wore a frown. Only when Rachel frowned could you tell her age.
Sarah said the first thing that came to mind. “I thought I saw a bug.”
Alex’s brows lifted. He obviously hadn’t expected her to lie. Sarah wasn’t sure why she’d lied either.
“A bug? I’ll have Fredrick call an exterminator in the morning.”
Sarah started to leave the room. “No, I don’t think that will be necessary. I’m sure it was nothing. Just some imaginary trick of the eye. Goodnight.”
She left the dining room then, not asking to be excused, not caring for what battle would or could take place in the dining room between Alex and her mother.

A month later, Sarah woke up in the middle of the night to hear a heavy pacing in the hall. She wasn’t in her normal bedroom. Dr. Patterson had put her in one of the guest rooms in the East Hall. The room was directly across from Alex’s. No one else’s bedroom was located on this side of the mansion. Only Sarah would be disturbed by him. She spent most of her days with him now. A sort of friendship that was long overdue began to form between the two. She slipped out of the bed and padded over to the door. She wore a silk pink spaghetti strap top and matching shorts.
Sarah’s hand froze on the knob. She heard whispering. Alex was talking to himself. Sarah was nervous. She hadn’t worked as a nurse for awhile. Once Rachel had got control of the estate, Sarah hadn’t really needed to work.
She sighed. Staying in the guest room wouldn’t do anyone any good. Alex needed her. She pulled open the door and stepped into the hallway. Alex was walking in her direction. He froze when he saw her. He seemed like a giant, looming in the dark corridor. Only the moon rays coming through the tall arched window gave them light. Alex’s shadow touched her toes. He only wore a black pair of men’s briefs. His well toned chest, arms, and legs were on display. Sarah kept her eyes trained on his eye in an effort for not stare at the juncture of this sculpted thighs. A blush spread up her neck when she acknowledged her curiosity. She was grateful for the dark. “What are you doing up?” Her voice hoarse with sleep.
Sarah looked into Alex’s midnight eyes and watched as they went wide.

Chapter 4 – Eyes Unveiled

“Civilian! Get down!” Alex started to run towards the woman. Long legs carried him quickly to her aid. What was she doing in the desert? How’d she get on the battlefield? He’d have to protect her. He locked an arm around her and threw her down on the sand.
The enemy had them surrounded, they were dropping like flies. They were outnumbered. Alex stood into a crouched position, bringing the anxious woman up with him. She was shouting at him, but
