she said, âI donât think Iâm really wanted here.â
Danny looked around in astonishment. âWhat are you talking about?â His expression cleared. âOh, you mean the girls? Donât take any notice of them.â Megan thought this was a bit unkind, seeing as they were both within earshot. The Thai-looking girlâs lips tightened. Danny laughed. âTheyâre just jealous because I wonât let them have a go on my board.â
âWhoâd want to?â the blonde girl flashed back.
Danny grinned. âThatâs Samantha. Sheâs my sister, so she has to hate everything I do.â
His sister!
Megan automatically felt relieved. Samantha was far more glamorous than she was. But if she was Dannyâs sister, then at least she wasnât his girlfriend . . . Her gaze swept over to the dark-eyed girl.
âThatâs Jasmine,â said Danny dismissively. âShe hangs around with us.â
Jasmine drooped slightly at Dannyâs words, as though disappointed by what heâd said.
âGo on.â Dannyâs pale gaze fastened on Megan again. âHave another go. Really.â
Why is he being so nice to me when the others donât want me around?
Megan wondered. She felt strangely flattered. Danny had actually noticed her over the past week! And heâd obviously forgiven her for knocking into him. âHow long have you been skateboarding?â she asked, as she stepped back onto the board.
Danny shrugged and looked at Paul. âYears,â he said.
Paul nodded in agreement. âIâve had six boards altogether.â
âSix!â Megan stared at him. âWhy?â
âSome got broken,â said Danny, with a grin. Paul grinned too, as though it were all a big joke. âBut itâs like buying anything. The more you spend, the better the deck. Iâm saving up for new Alien Workshop wheels.â
This went completely over Meganâs head. âJust the wheels?â
âSure,â said Danny. âYou buy everything separately and then build it yourself.â
âYou mean it doesnât come like this?â asked Megan, staring down at the black and white graphic design under her feet. âYou have to put it together yourself? Like a â a bookshelf?â
Paul frowned, but Danny laughed. âYeah, like abookshelf.â He seemed to find this very funny. âA bookshelf! You canât skate on a bookshelf.â
âBet you could,â Paul broke in. âYou could slide along the spine.â
Danny swung round, his eyes alight. âWe havenât done a bookshelf before. Thereâs a house down my road thatâs got a skip outside. Bet theyâre throwing out a bookshelf.â
Megan looked from one to the other, bewildered. These boys were on another planet! Samantha yawned loudly. âAre you going to do any more tricks, or are you just going to stand around and chat?â she asked in a bored voice. âBecause we need to go to the club and get it sorted.â
âYeah,â said Jasmine, who was biting her nails. âMe too.â
Samantha rolled her eyes. She turned to Megan. âYou going tonight?â
âGoing to what?â asked Megan.
âThe youth club thing, of course,â said Samantha. âDidnât you know about it?â
Megan tried to think. âA poster at the arts centre?â she hazarded. âSomething for charity?â
Samantha nodded and flicked her shiny hair over her shoulder. âIâm on the committee.â
Megan was surprised. Samantha didnât look likethe sort of girl whoâd want to bother herself with committees. âOh, right. Sorry, no, donât think I can make it.â If it had been Mari asking, Megan would have been there like a shot. But something about Samantha made her feel uncomfortable. And a whole youth club of people she didnât know . . . Megan wasnât sure she was
