panties.
âJust stop. I want him, all right? I want him so bad, I accidentally moaned a little during Government today when I imagined his Speedo slipping off when he dives into the pool.â
I laugh so hard I snort. âYou
moaned?
â
âI was quiet. At least, I think.â Her face is full-on scarlet now, and she picks at her bottom lip, trying to glare at me. âI actually like Rob, you know.â
I nod slowly. Yes, I know. Romance, true love, yadda yadda.
Iâm still laughing when my phone rings. I grab it from my pillow and nearly fall off the bed when I see the name flashing on the screen.
âOh. Itâs Sam.â
âSam? The new guy? You know him?â
âYeah. Iâm paired with him for that Shakespeare project in English.â
She jumps onto her knees. âYou didnât tell me that! Heâs in my Government class. Heâs sort of hot.â
âDid he hear you moan too?â
She smacks my leg. âAnswer it!â
I stick my tongue out at her and slide my finger over the surface of the phone. âHello?â
Silence.
âHello?â I say again.
âHadley?â
âYeah.â
âItâs Sam Bennett.â
âHey.â
âHey. So, listen, I need to change our plans for tomorrow.â
âOh.â
âI was wondering if you could come here.â
âTo your house?â Katâs mouth drops open. âWouldnât the library be easier?â
âNot for me. Is that a problem?â His voice sounds weird. Not that I know his voice really well or anything. It just sounds . . . strained and sharp. In class, he sounded so relaxed, so amiable.
âIs everything all right?â I ask, my heart suddenly hammering.
âYeah. Why wouldnât it be?â
âIâm not sure. You just sound . . . funny.â Kat raises her eyebrows at me and Sam clears his throat.
âIâm fine. Can you come here tomorrow after school or not?â
âUm. Sure, thatâs fine.â
âGreat. Iâll text you the address.â
âOkay, see youââ
Click.
I flinch and stare at my phone.
Sam B. Call Ended.
âWhat just happened?â Kat asks.
I manage a weak laugh. âIâm not sure, but apparently Iâm going over to his house tomorrow to work on this project.â
Kat frowns and then releases a colossal â
Ohhh.
â
I look at her. âWhat do you mean, â
Ohhhâ?
â
âUm. Nothing.â
âUh-uh. That â
Ohhhâ
was not a nothing kind of â
Ohhh.â
It was a very loaded â
Ohhh.â
â
She blows some air into her bangs. âItâs justâYou were supposed to meet in the library?â
âYeah.â
âYou set that up before the whole locker thing?â
Nod.
âWell, I mean . . . Heâs new and doesnât really know anyone, but then he saw the locker. So what if he thinks . . .â
â
Ohhh.
You think he wants to hook up with me?â
She shrugs. âI donât know. You said he was acting weird on the phone.â
âHe was, but itâs not like Iâm acquainted with his normal MO.â My stomach somersaults as I think back to English. âCrap, he was talking to Josh before class. And after class.â
âI heard heâs a baseball player.â
âUgh.â I drop my head into my hands. Did Sam really change the place so we could hook up? Not that I consider myself particularly alluring, but it is suspicious considering the whole locker debacle. I run my fingers over the top of my hand and feel suddenly nauseous. He just seemed so different. Like when I looked at him, I saw something I recognized and could understand. Iâm not even sure what it was. Something about him was just . . . familiar.
âHadley, I hate to tell you this, but this is kind of your ownââ
âDonât. Donât say
