Iâd love for it to be possible for you to just move in here and settle down and all of us to carry on as if nothingâs changed. But that isnât possible. Things have changed â changed radically, for you and for me. We need time to come to terms with that, and to make it work.â He leaned forward and looked at them both intently. âAnd I do want it to work. I really do. I want to get this right, for all our sakes.â
âCruel to be kind?â Jade wondered.
âNothing so calculated,â Chance told her. âI just need time to sort things out.â
âSo you dump us at boarding school so you can get your work done.â
Chance sighed. âI suppose thatâs what it comes down to. I know you donât like the idea â I donât like the idea either â but Iâm afraid thatâs how it has to be.â
âBut why?â Rich demanded.
âIâll tell you why as soon as I can,â he promised. âReally I will. You donât know me, but Iâm asking you to trust me. This is the best way. Till the end of term â a few weeks. Then weâll discuss it properly.â He nodded to Rich. âAnd I mean discuss it. And weâll decide together what to do next, whatâs best. As a family. Deal?â
Neither Jade nor Rich said anything.
âLike I said,â Chance went on. âI donât expect you to like it. But I hope youâll trust me enough to take my word.â
âThatâs not fair,â Jade said.
âIâll tell you whatâs not fair,â Chance said quietly. âI could have ignored the call from Mrs Gilpin. I could have told her that I never even saw mychildren, or that I donât think theyâre mine at all, or that Iâm just not interested in my own kids. They donât want to know me, so why should I want to know them â look after them? Put myself out for them? Change my entire life for them? Just because they lost their mum and thereâs no one else. But I didnât. Because that wouldnât be fair. It really wouldnât.â
Both Rich and Jade were looking down at the floor. By the time they looked up again, Chance had gone.
âMaybe we should give him a break,â Rich said to Jade. âGive him back his phone and cigarettes.â Rich could sense Jade tense. âYou canât keep blaming him for what happened to Mum.â
âJust because he suddenly goes all slushy and says he cares doesnât mean itâs true.â
âHe said weâd talk,â Rich pointed out.
âYeah, after heâs packed us off to school. Then what? A live-in nanny for the holidays so he can get on with this important job of his? So he can build his career without being distracted . Well, Mary Poppins we donât need.â
âIâm going to tell him you took his mobile and hisciggies,â Rich decided. âAnd the lighter.â
âCreep!â Jade made to grab Rich, but he was already on his way to the study.
They heard the phone ring and both stopped, close to the study door.
The door was open a fraction and they could hear Chanceâs voice from inside.
âNo, not at the flat,â he was saying. âToo many⦠distractions right now.â
âHe means us,â Jade mouthed at Rich.
âI know,â he mouthed back. âWe shouldnât be listening,â he whispered. But neither of them moved away from the door.
âI have it safe,â Chance was saying. âIâll bring it with me. Be happy to get it to someone who knows what to do with the stuff. I canât risk them finding it.â
âDoes he mean us again?â Rich murmured.
Jade shrugged.
âHalf an hour then,â Chance was saying. âSomewhere safe where we can talk and I can hand it over to you. Donât come here, though, whatever you do⦠Because Iâm telling you.â He sounded angry now.
