theyâll have seven.â
âThe evil sneaky swine,â said Jamie. âI knew it was too good to be true.â
âTheyâll know all about our Christmas tree,â said The Moan.
âYouâre not lying, are you, Jennifer?â I asked, but I knew it was true. Everything started to fall into place.
âI do not tell lies,â she answered, sounding very high and mighty.
âThatâs true, she doesnât,â said The Moan, but he didnât mean it as a compliment. âShe never covers for me when Iâm in trouble.â
I glanced around at the boys. They looked really, really depressed about this news.
âLetâs say itâs true then. But how do you know about it?â
âMy friend Sarah is friends with his sisterâs friend, Fiona.â
âEh?â
âI just heard, OK?â
âWhy are you telling us this? Is it because you want to gloat?â
âNo.â
âHa!â said The Moan. âShe doesnât even know what gloat means.â
âI do so, stupid boy! It means being happy that someone else is sad, and then you make fun of them. And no, that isnât why Iâm telling you.â
âWhy then?â
âThey were going to cheat. I didnât think it was fair. Especially as theyâre all bigger than you anyway. I hate things that arenât fair.â
âThatâs really nice of you, Jennifer,â I said. And I meant it. âIâm really sorry about . . . you know.â
âAre you?â
âYeah. I should never have made you show us your bare bum. I should just have said there were no girls allowed.â
âBut why are there no girls allowed?â
âWhy? But . . . but . . . I donât know, really.â
I was going to say that stuff about girls tidying up your den and making your action figures wear frilly dresses, but I realized that Jennifer wasnât that kind of girl. In fact, for all I knew for sure, there werenât any girls who would do all that.
I looked round for support from my gang, but they were all hanging their heads. I could understand why.
âWhat are you going to do about the game?â Jennifer asked after a while. Sheâd probably got bored with waiting for me to say something.
âWell, we can either not turn up, or play anyway, with six men.â
Jennifer started laughing. âSix men! Ha, you mean six boys.â
âYou always say âmenâ in teams. Youâd probably say men even if you had girls.â
âAnd you canât get anyone else to play?â
âToo late now.â
Jennifer was looking at me in a funny way.
Then I had one of my ideas. It was probably the craziest idea Iâd ever had, and that was saying something.
I turned to the Gang. âWe need to have a talk in the den,â I said to them. Then I turned again to Jennifer.
âWait here a minute, will you?â I said it in my nicest voice.
Chapter Fourteen
THE KISS
âWhatâs all this about?â asked Noah when we were inside.
âIâm going to ask her.â
âAsk who?â said Jamie.
âJennifer.â
âAsk her what?â said The Moan.
âIf she wants to play.â
âWHAAAAAAT!â The shout came from all of them together.
âLook,â I said, âwe havenât got anyone else. And she looks quite sporty. Have you seen her doing cartwheels?â
âBut cartwheels arenât allowed in football,âsaid The Moan.
âItâs just an example. She might be one of those girls who are really good at football. I saw a film about them once.â
âYeah,â said Jamie thoughtfully. âI saw that. She runs fast too. And running
is
allowed in football. In fact itâs, erm, the opposite of not allowed . . .â
âCompulsory,â said Noah.
âYeah, that,â said Jamie.
âSheâs your
