chair across from her partner and waved at the waitress. âWhereâs Susannah?â
âDonât know.â Alison slid a bar napkin into the magazine to mark her page and set it aside. âShe had a meeting with a client this afternoon, and she wasnât back yet when I left.â
âIf it was Pierce at the museum, she might not be back at all.â The waitress brought Kit a glass of Chardonnay, and she sipped it gratefully.
Alison looked puzzled. âYou donât think sheâs serious about him, do you?â
âWhy shouldnât she be? Iâve only met him a couple of times, but he seems nice enough, and heâs certainly attractive.â
âHeâs not her type. Look at me in disbelief if you want, Kit, but underneath all that froth, our Susannahâs a very steady sort. And somehow, I suspect, Pierce isnât. Sheâs no more serious about him than...than you are about Jarrett Webster.â
Kit almost choked. âOh, well, when you put it that way...â She drew a set of imaginary parallel lines on the tabletop with the base of her wineglass. âAli, if you had to raise a lot of money for a good cause in a very little time, what would you do?â
âIs this a trick question, or wasnât I listening at our staff meeting Monday?â
âIt came up since then. Itâs sort of a competition.â At least that much was the truth, Kit thought.
Alison looked thoughtful, but before she could comment Susannah came in with a swirl of her jersey skirt and sank into the chair across from Kit. âGuess what I just saw, parked straight in front of the brownstone. The most gorgeous black Porsche with Teddy on the license plates. Putting two and two togetherââ
âAnd coming up with seven, no doubt,â Alison said. âI thought incredible math was Kitâs specialty.â
âMaybe the car belongs to a bear collector,â Kit said.
Susannah leaned forward. âThen what was Jarrett Webster doing walking down the street toward it?â
âTaking a healthy stroll?â Kit mused. âOr slumming, perhaps?â
âYou really donât know?â Susannah sounded doubtful. âI thought perhaps he was looking for you, but Rita said he hadnât come into the office.â
âSee, Kit? I told you Susannah wasnât serious about Pierce. In fact, itâs beginning to sound as if sheâs got Jarrett Webster on the brain, instead.â
Susannah rolled her eyes. âAli, you know very well I wouldnât poach on Kitâs territory.â
âYouâre welcome to him,â Kit offered.
âYou two and your men,â Alison grumbled.
Susannah sat up straight. âOh? As if there arenât any in your life?â
âThe men in my life are friends, not romantic interests. And now that weâre on the subjectââ
âIâm lost,â Susannah said. âWhich subject? Friends or romantic interests?â
âFriends. Two of mine are announcing their engagement tomorrow evening. The party came up rather suddenly, andââ
âAnd you want to know what to take as a gift? Iâd suggest a bottle of champagne. Thatâs always appreciated.â Susannah flagged the waitress. âI donât know about you two, but Iâm starving.â
âThanks, darling, but I can figure out a gift,â Alison said. âThe trouble is, Iâm also supposed to attend a convention banquet for one of our clients. Itâs not critically important, I supposeâI mean, Iâll stop by the convention during the day, and itâs not as if weâre in charge of the arrangements for the banquet itself. But I think Tryad ought to be represented, so I was wondering if one of youââ
Susannah shook her head. âSorry, but Iâve already made plans for the whole weekend.â
âIâll go,â Kit said. âTell me where
