access,â he pointed out.
She glared at him. âIs this about you going to the wedding? I already said no.â She didnât even have to think about it. The word had fallen from her lips. She had been stunned by his request. How could he ask her on a dateâeven a fake oneâwhen he had broken her heart? Didnât he have any feelings?
âI need more than a wedding invite,â he explained. âI need total access. The rehearsal dinner. Behind the scenes.â
âItâs not necessary.â Angie shook her head and started for her car. âHeidi may be out of the wedding, period. She has a head injury.â
âBut the people at the bachelorette party would be there,â he said softly.
She stopped and turned. âYou donât think it was an accident.â
âIt could be an accident. The police think so, and I havenât seen any information about her blood alcohol level,â he admitted. âI think someone may have tried to hurt Heidi. It probably had something to do with her private life. I just donât know how they did it.â
âPrivate life?â She thought that was an odd choice of words and she thought about the other comments heâd made about Heidi. She lifted her chin when she realized what he was trying not to say. âYou mean drugs. Thatâs why you asked if she was on something.â
His eyes widened with admiration. âGood catch. I donât know if sheâs still using.â
She pursed her lips as she tried to remember how Heidi had acted over the past few days. âI havenât seen any signs of it.â
âYou werenât looking for signs, but maybe if I hung around while you were preparing for the wedding...â he said hopefully as he let his words trail off.
Angie sighed and crossed her arms. âWhy do you have to drag me into this?â
âWhy wonât you let me be your date?â he countered.
âI think itâs obvious.â It didnât matter if it was a pretend date. Spending a day with Cole would remind her of what she once had with him. What she had lost.
Coleâs jaw tightened. âAre you taking someone else?â
She went still. Angie would love to lie and avoid any discussion on her nonexistent love life. But it wouldnât take much for him to find out the truth. âNo.â
His blue eyes darkened. âWill someone get jealous if you take me?â he asked stiffly.
She wanted to scoff at the suggestion. âNo.â
He spread his arms out. âThen whatâs the problem?â
He didnât get it. How was that possible? For a private detective, Cole Foster was oblivious. âI donât have to give you a reason.â She turned and marched to her car.
âCome on, Angie,â he said right behind her.
âAfter all,â she said, âyou didnât give me a reason why you broke up with me.â
âIs that what this is all about?â His voice rose with incredulity. âI told you why I needed to break up with you.â
âYou werenât ready for a relationship.â She yanked her car door open. âItâs you, not me.â She threw the water bottle into the backseat with more force than necessary. âSomething about how I deserved better.â
âYou do,â he said quietly.
She wasnât going to fall for the sincerity in his voice. No, what Cole really meant was that he deserved better. âAre you dating anyone?â she asked huskily as the emotions clawed her throat. âWouldnât she be upset if you started hanging around your ex? Or would she understand that it was just for an assignment?â
âThere hasnât been anyone since you.â
Angie didnât realize how much she needed to hear those words until he had spoken them. If heâd been in a relationship with someone else, it would have destroyed her. âI find that hard to believe,â she
