can I help you, sir or maâam?â
âAgent Rose? You must come at once. At once! I am in terrible danger. Things are quite violent. Quite violent.â
Her heart rate picked up as adrenaline surged. âPlease stay calm, sir. First, may I ask who I am speaking to, and where you would like me to go?â she asked in a carefully practiced, neutral tone.
âDonât you know me?â the man demanded.
âNot by voice alone, sir, no.â The number didnât match any of the bureau phones from nearby districts, and it didnât sound like any from Altinâs department.
âThis is Dr. Emir. Iâve spoken to you about my work.â
She relaxed a bit. She had a hard time thinking Santa from the lab was in that much trouble. âYes, I remember you now. Is this about Detective Altinâs case, Doctor?â
âNo. Yes. Possibly. My work is . . .â Emir trailed off. âI am in danger. My work is threatened.â
She perked up again. âCan you describe the threat, Doctor?â
âThe history of the world is in danger.â
She relaxed . . . again. Repressing a sigh, she asked, âCould you possibly be a little more specific?â
âSomeone is attempting to steal my research.â
âYes, we discussed that on Monday. Have you found any evidence that your computer was tampered with? Mr. Troom was doing a keystroke check on the computer when I left.â
âHenry found nothing.â
âI see. So this isnât about your research, itâs about the vandalism?â
âI suppose.â
âAnd, youâre aware Detective Altin is handling your case? Itâs out of my jurisdiction unless we find evidence there was a violent crime committed or national security is at risk.â
âYes.â
âDid you call Detective Altin?â She drew a few stars on her notepad.
âI did.â
A few more stars appeared while she counted to ten. âDid Detective Altin say anything about the threat?â
âHe said he would look into the matter.â
âI see. Has he?â
âNo!â Dr. Emir said triumphantly. âI have waited patiently, yet nothing has been done.â
She glanced at the time on the large city clock. âTell you what, DoctorâÂDetective Altin should be back from lunch by now. Why donât I call the precinct and have a chat with him?â
âYou must tell him how important this is. Impress upon him the vital nature of my work.â
âI will talk to him about it,â Sam promised as she hung up. With a sighâÂthis time very audibleâÂshe dialed Altinâs number. This would make his day.
âAgent Rose? Is this urgent?â Altin made it sound like anything less than a definitive yes wouldnât be worth the interruption.
âDr. Emir just called.â
âHe called me twenty minutes ago,â Altin said, sounding annoyed.
âHeâs the type who wants things done yesterday.â
Altin mumbled something under his breath.
âIs there anything I need to know right now?â Sam asked.
Altin sucked air in with a hiss. âYeah. I was going to call you in an hour or so. We canât find Mordicai Robbins.â
âHeâs the security guard who left early, isnât he?â Sam pulled out the case notes to confirm.
âThatâs him.â Altin paused, then added, âA fisherman reported a sunken truck in the water this morning up past the dam.â
âMr. Robbins was in it?â Sam guessed.
âNot that we can see yet, but itâs the same make and model as his truck. I was waiting for them to finish hauling it up so we could check the plate numbers. If Mr. Robbins is in there, Iâll let you know, but I have a nasty hunch weâre going to have a truck sans driver.â
âWhat about the girl, Melody Chimes? Have you found her yet?â
Altin chuckled. âThat one,
