sigh.
He turned to Mrs. Heinie. âBarry A. Bone was the only student who stayed for the whole examyesterday,â he said. âHe got the highest score on the test.â
Mrs. Heinieâs mouth dropped open. She stared at Headmaster Upchuck. âYou meanâ?â
âThe dog is on the Honor Roll,â Upchuck said. âI canât send him away. The school average will go down too low.â
Mrs. Heinie started to stutter. âB-B-Bernieâs d-dogâhe gets to stay in school?â
The Headmaster nodded. âYes. Heâs our top student. Heâll have to stay. Iâll change the rule immediately. Pets are allowed at the Rotten School.â
I sang out a loud cheer of victory as Barry trotted into the room. âThank you, sir,â I said, shaking Upchuckâs hand. âYou wonât regret this. Barry will be a credit to the school, sir. Barry will make you proud.â
âHELP!â Mrs. Heinie cried. âGet him off me! Get the new student off my LEG!â
A BOUT THE A UTHOR
R.L. Stine graduated from Rotten School with a solid D+ average, which put him at the top of his class. He says that his favorite activities at school were Scratching Body Parts and Making Armpit Noises.
In sixth grade, R.L. won the school Athletic Award for his performance in the Wedgie Championships. Unfortunately, after the tournament, his underpants had to be surgically removed.
R.L. was very popular in school. He could tell this because kids always clapped and cheered wheneverhe left the room. One of his teachers remembers him fondly: âR.L. was a hard worker. He was so proud of himself when he learned to wave bye-bye with both hands.â
After graduation, R.L. became well known for writing scary book series such as The Nightmare Room, Fear Street, Goosebumps, and Mostly Ghostly, and a short story collection called Beware!
Today, R.L. lives in a cage in New York City, where he is busy writing stories about his school days. Says he: âI wish everyone could be a Rotten Student.â
