could the wolf be? The pillows still smelled like him, but Carson missed his warmth. He cracked his eyes open, scanning the room for Brody. He sighed, unsurprised when he didn’t see the man. He’d have sensed Brody had his mate been around.
Taking a deep breath, Carson focused on their connection. He fell on it naturally, as if he’d been bonded with the wolf his entire life.
    “Brody?”
“Coming your way, Carson,” his mate’s amused voice answered.
    “Be patient.”
Feeling reassured, Carson leaned against the pillows and waited.
Indeed, a few minutes later, Brody entered the room, carrying a paper bag. “Breakfast,” he announced.
Delicious scents assaulted Carson’s nostrils, the comfortable, safe and yes, sexy one of his mate combining with slightly earthier aromas. “Mmmm…Blueberry muffins. My favorite.” He extended his hands for the bag carrying his prize. “Give ’em here.”
Brody laughed and walked to the bed. “Don’t I get a good-morning kiss first?”

Carson pretended considering it for a moment. “Okay,” he said.
“But just a short one. You know, morning breath and all that.”
He puckered his lips as Brody abandoned the bag of goodies on the bed. “I couldn’t care less about morning breath,” he murmured.
The wolf pressed his lips to Brody’s in a soft, sensual kiss that made Carson’s toes curl. His mate didn’t try to take it any further and broke away just as Carson was really getting into it. “Go ahead and eat,” the other man said, a knowing twinkle in his eyes. “I want you well fed for later.”
Carson’s slight disgruntlement changed into amusement and he snickered. “Oh, so that’s your evil plan, my big bad wolf. You intend to fatten me up and devour me later.”
The teasing comment escaped his lips without him intending it to, but Brody just grinned. “Oh, I’ll devour you all right. Now be a good boy and eat all your greens.”
Carson snickered, silently relieved that he hadn’t spoiled the carefree mood. He opened the bag and retrieved his more-than-generous breakfast. Other than the muffins, Brody had brought him a packed salad as well as granola bars, water, and even carrot juice. For anyone else, it would have seemed frugal. For Carson, it represented a feast. But still, carrot juice?
“I’m not a rabbit, you know,” he commented.
Brody flushed. “It was an impulse buy. If you don’t want it—”
“It’s fine,” Carson interrupted his mate. “It’s more than fine.
Thank you for being so thoughtful.” In that moment, Carson noticed the bag didn’t hold any food for a carnivorous diet. “But what about you?”
    Brody shrugged. “I ate out.”
Carson was torn between being touched, angry, and upset. He sighed, having suddenly lost his appetite. “Brody, I understand you eat meat. You don’t have to hide it from me. Of course, I wouldn’t like you to eat lamb, but other than that, I’m fine with it.”

“I just don’t want to scare you,” Brody replied softly. Through their connection, Carson could sense what Brody wasn’t saying. The wolf feared Carson’s reaction when he first acknowledged this basic difference.
Taking a deep breath, Carson struggled to find the right words.
“Look, we’re mates, right?” When Brody nodded, Carson continued,
“Then we’re going to have to get used to each of our quirks, our personalities, and needs. How can we do that if you hide from me?”
For a few moments, Brody remained silent. “You’re right,” he said at last. “I don’t want to hide. Tell you what. When we go to lunch, we’ll eat together.”
Carson grinned, acknowledging his victory. “But for now, you’re sharing my muffins.”
Brody chuckled and stole another closed-mouthed kiss. “How could I refuse?”
His mate’s voice dripped with sexual innuendo, and Carson became hungry for something else. He hastily chewed on his salad and grabbed a sip
