Sallyâs heart but you want her to say, âThatâs fine, Tom.â
Well, it isnât fine!
â
Tomâs eyes narrowed. âYouâre being emotional about this.â
Bryony gave a growl of feminine frustration. âAnd youâre being ice cold, as usual! Show a modicum of sensitivity here, Tom Hunter! You decided you didnât want her. End of story.â
It wasnât the end of the story.
Not by a long way.
It had been so much more complicated than that.
âYou should have told me she was back.â
âWhy would I do that? I assumed it would be of no interest to you.â
Tom gritted his teeth. âSally and I were together for almost three years, for goodnessâ sake. Of course I would have been interested in the fact that she was back.â
âYou drove her away, so I assumed her return was a matter of the same indifference to you.â
Tom closed his eyes briefly and muttered something under his breath. âWhose side are you on?â
âSallyâs,â Bryony replied sweetly. âAnd if you want my opinion, she should have blacked your eye seven years ago when she found you with thatâthatâ

Jack winced. âSweetheart, youââ
âDonât

me!â Bryony glared at her husband. âTom behaved horribly to Sally.â
âI wasnât
with
anyone,â Tom gritted, âI went on one date with another woman, thatâs all! One date and it was after Sally and I had split up. After weâd agreed to see other people.â
â
Youâd
agreed to see other people,â Bryony reminded him coldly. âSally was so devastated she just sat in her flat broken into tiny pieces.â
Tom winced at the description. âIt was the wrong time for both of us and we were in an impossible situation, Bry, as you would realize if you took the emotion out of it and looked at it logically.â
âAnd if you took the logic out of it and looked at it emotionally, you might stand some chance of sustaining a relationship with a woman!â Bryony glared at him.âYou threw away something really special. Youâre as bad as Jack!â
âHey!â Jack put a hand on his chest, totally affronted. âI married you!â
Bryony breathed out heavily. âOnly because I told you some home truths,â she said bluntly. âIf Iâd left it to you, youâd still be dating half of Cumbria. You were so afraid of emotional involvement I virtually had to tie you up and beat you before youâd agree that you loved me.â
Jack gave her a sexy wink. âIâm not sure you should be revealing the details of our bedroom antics to your brother, darling.â
Bryony pulled a face. âWhat Iâm saying, as you well know, is that both of you have spent the best part of your adult lives avoiding commitment. Of course Sally doesnât want a conversation with you, Tom. Why would she? You lost that right when you started dating other people.â
Tom sighed. âYou make it sound like a crime, but we werenât together any more, Bry.â
âThatâs right.â Bryonyâs tone was chilly. âYou werenât. You left the rest of us to clear up the mess.â
âI tried to see her, to check that she was all right.â
âWell, of course she wasnât all right! And she didnât want your pity!â
Tom gritted his teeth and drew in a steadying breath. âDo you realize how contradictory youâre being?â
Jack groaned out a warning. âFor goodnessâ sake, donât tell her that.â
âWell, on the one hand sheâs telling me I left her to comfort Sally, and on the other sheâs telling me that Sally wouldnât have wanted me around anyway.â
Bryony scowled at him. âYou behaved badly!â
Jack yawned and reached for his beer. âOK, honey, give the guy a break. Heâs not
