Goodbye
The Egyptian police soon arrived, and dragged a cocooned Massri into the back of a police van. They threw his henchman, Chai, in behind him.
âWell,â Jack said to Massri, âso much for ruling the world, huh?â
Massri mumbled something that sounded a lot like, âYou havenât seen the last of me.â
A policeman slammed the door in his face and climbed into the driverâs seat.
With a rumble of the engine, the van quickly drove off, and with it, one of the most sinister villains Jack had ever faced.
âI guess we can return the diadem to Mr Hassan,â said Max. âFor a while I didnât know who to trust.â
âWhy donât I do it?â offered Kate. âAfter all, you boys need to get home.â
Jack smiled at her. âThanks,â he said.
Kate began to tap furiously on her Watch Phone. âI hope you donât mind . . .â she said. âI told the Director Iâd call.â
The screen on her Watch Phone sizzled. Jack peered over her shoulder as an image of a man appeared. It was the same man heâd met in Gerald Barterâs office in the Arctic. Now Jack knew the true identity of his boss.
âHi, Director,â Kate said, speaking into her wrist. âThe package is safe.â
âGood work, Secret Agent Starlight,â he replied.
Jack had never heard the code name âStarlightâ before. Suddenly Director Barter noticed Jack and Max in the background.
âHello, Secret Agent Courage,â he said to Jack. âI knew I couldnât keep you away from Egypt for long.â
Jack smiled at the Director, hoping he wasnât going to get into trouble for muscling in on Kateâs mission.
âHappy to see you too, Secret Agent Wisdom,â said the Director. He was talking to Max.
When Max had told Jack about his missions, heâd never mentioned his code name. For an older brother, âWisdomâ was a perfect fit.
âWhereâs the diadem?â the Director asked.
âStarlight is taking it to Mr Hassan today,â said Max.
âGood work,â he said. âAll of you. Director Barter signing off.â
Then the screen went black.
âWell,â said Kate, holding up the diadem, âI guess Iâd better get this to Mr Hassan. Itâs been great,â she said to the boys.
âItâs been good working with you too,â said Jack. âIâm glad you became a GPF agent.â
Kate smiled, then threw her arms around him.
As she pulled back, she planted a kiss on his cheek. Jack blushed. Max cleared his throat.
âMaybe we can visit you in Cambodia,â said Jack. He really hoped heâd get a chance to see Kate again.
âIâd like that,â she said, smiling.
âSay hi to your mom for me,â said Max.
âI will,â she said as she waved goodbye and turned to leave. âWish me luck on my next adventure!â
The boys watched Kate until she was out of sight.
Jack turned to his brother. âIâve been waiting for months to say this,â he said. âLetâs go home!â
He took the Portable Map out of his Book Bag. He opened it out and put it on the ground. Pulling out a small flag of England, Jack stuck it on the right place. He grabbed his brotherâs hand and held on tight.
Jack yelled, âOff to England!â A brilliant light flashed, and he and Max disappeared.
Chapter 15:
The Trip Home
When they returned home, they found themselves in Jackâs bedroom. There was a knock at the door.
âHowâs the homework going?â came their motherâs voice.
Jack and Max looked at each other. Jack started to giggle. If only his mom knew.
âGreat,â he said. âCome in and I can show you.â
The door opened. When Corinne saw Max standing there, she nearly fainted from the shock.
âMax!â she exclaimed as she ran over to him. She hugged him tight. âWhat are
