can take
me here."
That made no sense, but my brain wasn't exactly functioning
at premium efficiency.
"Only you, Will. You can... oh God...."
"If you wanna talk about this, babe, you better make it
quick." Stars exploded behind my eyes and the truck spun. Waves battered
my body, and I hung onto Talia as moonlight dazzled me. I watched her convulse
on top of me, saw her scream, but I couldn't hear anything over the roaring in
my ears.
She rolled off me, but I wouldn't let go, holding her close
while her ragged breath warmed my chest, calming my racing heart. My brain
wanted to come back to life, but I wouldn't let it. Not just yet. Reality could
have tomorrow. I needed to hold onto this fantasy for tonight.
Talia stirred, pulling away from me. "I gotta go."
    "Yeah, I kinda figured."
She sat up and retrieved the rag that had been her shirt.
"Let me have yours."
I heard her suck in her breath as I pulled my t-shirt over
my head and handed it to her. The sleeves reached her elbows and the hem
covered her butt. "You're swimming in that thing. Your boyfriend's gonna
notice."
"I know." She pulled her shorts on and grabbed her
sandals. "Thank you, Will."
    Thanking a man for sex—especially where-no-man-should-go
sex—always meant something else. "Uh-huh."
    "I can handle Alex now."
I did not need to hear that.
"I needed to get laid so I could resist the
temptation."
And since her idiot boyfriend turned her down, I was the
next choice. Nice. "What about what's-his-name... Scott?"
She was finger-combing her hair, fighting with a
particularly nasty snarl. "Ouch. Yeah, I gotta deal with him." She
hopped off the truck and pressed closed lips against mine, a nice little
brush-off. "Bye." Her sandals swung from her fingers as she walked
barefoot across the wet sand.
I watched her disappear into the darkness, and then lay back
on the quilt and argued with myself about chasing after her. Let her go.
But I didn't want to, damn it. Yeah, she'd used me, she'd
hurt me... again. But at least when Talia screwed me now, I felt something.
Something I couldn't switch on and off.
The marks I'd left on her body would fade in a couple of
days, but the scars she'd carved on my soul would live forever. Once and done?
Not with that woman.

The Wrong Reasons

Lake Michigan's endless waves pounded a relentless rhythm
against the sandy shore. Cheater, cheater, cheater. I started the car
and peeled out of there, flinging sand and seaweed into the moonlit sky.
Again? I did it again? Not fucking Will. I'd done
that before. I couldn't believe I'd cheated again. Damn it!
When I thought I was being unfaithful to Will, Alex told me
confessing an indiscretion to a lover only made the guilty party feel less
guilty. At the time I believed him, but now I couldn't live with another
secret. Scott needed to know. I drove straight to his apartment and knocked on
his door. No answer. I made a fist and pounded until I heard him yell.
"Coming!" A few seconds later the door flew open
and Scott stood there in nothing but flannel pajama pants.
"Hi." I gasped and stared at his broad bare
shoulders and well-muscled arms. Damn. Maybe I should've persisted when he
turned me down.
"Hey." He blinked at me and ran his hand through
his rumpled, dirty-blond hair. His sleepy brown eyes fixed on my chest. "Where'd
you get that shirt?"
Will's shirt. Forgot about that. "A friend gave
it to me." Friend? Hardly, but one word couldn't describe our
relationship, so I didn't try. "Can I come in?"
"Oh, yeah." He stepped back and let me by.
"Sorry, I'm not quite awake. What time is it?"
My fingers caught on a stubborn snarl as I twisted them in
my hair. "Late. Early." His big, plush couch beckoned, and I sank
down into it. So comforting. Warm colors and soothing shapes decorated
the room. He turned the lamp down so the light wouldn't irritate our eyes. So
thoughtful.
"Would you like some coffee?" He strolled into the
kitchen and brought back two full mugs.
