guy.â
âDeShawn as my date to the Grammys?â I hadnât thought about it before, but not only would that be a great message to the reporters, it would also be a message to Sam. Heâll know Iâm serious about moving on if I bring DeShawn to a public red carpet event.
âYes, and as your date to everything. No one has to know that youâre not actually dating. It can be your mystery. Zac and I played games with the media for years before we ever admitted to being in a relationship.â
âSo, if they ask me about us, what should I say?â
Mystique grins. âJust smile and say, âI never talk about my private life.â â
She never talks about her private life. But . . . I think that everyoneâs else life is totally fair game for Mystique.

âS pelmanites,â Gia barks in her bossy voice. âLetâs get this dance perfected. I will get extra credit in our ADW class if we do this right for the program.â
ADW is our African Diaspora and the World class. Itâs mandatory for every freshman at Spelman. Itâs the one class I share with all of my new friends.
Weâve been practicing Giaâs dance in the common area of our dormitory. Every time I see someone walking by, like theyâre going to get some rest, I envy them. Gia is ridiculous with her work ethic! I am tired.
âIâm not doing this dance,â Meagan says. âIt requires way too much movement, and I am sweaty and hot by the first half of the song. That isnât cute at all.â
âThere arenât going to be any Morehouse men at the program, Meagan,â Piper says. âItâs going to be just us girls.â
âAre we doing this or arenât we?â I ask. âIf not, I need to practice my Grammy performance.â
âWhat are you singing?â Piper asks.
â âThe Highlight.â â
Meagan says, âWhat are you wearing, though? Thatâs more important than the song. Who knows who might see you on the red carpet? It could be your fairy tale prince.â
I laugh out loud. Meaganâs priorities are always hilarious. Itâs always about how to land the husband with her.
Gia lets out a low wolflike growl. âIs this going to be a group effort or am I doing this dance solo?â
We trudge back over to our positions and go through the dance, this time managing to get through Giaâs backbreaking routine without collapsing.
âBetter,â Gia says emotionlessly when the music stops. âNext time, maybe weâll actually look like we know this routine.â
âMan, whatever!â Piper says. âIâm done rehearsing! Iâve got to study. You act like weâre being paid for this performance.â
âI thought yâall wanted to do everything in excellence!â Thereâs a pleading tone in Giaâs voice that makes all three of us stop for a moment.
âCome on, Gia. What are you really stressed out about?â I ask. âIt canât be this dance. I mean, itâs really not that serious, you know?â
Gia sighs and wipes her sweat drenched brow with a towel. âItâs Ricky. I donât know what heâs tripping on, but ever since that Gamma Phi Gamma party, heâs been acting some kind of way toward me.â
âWhat do you mean?â Piper asks. âRicky is the perfect boyfriend.â
âThereâs nothing specific,â Gia says. âItâs just a general feeling that weâre drifting away from each other, and that thereâs nothing that I can do about it.â
âDo you think itâs another girl?â I ask. Iâm hoping not, because Ricky was giving me hope that there were some good guys still left on the planet. If heâs playing Gia, I wonât know what to believe anymore.
âNo. Ricky wouldnât do that. He would break up with me before he played me for somebody else. Thatâs
