does it?“ Selena grimaced. „I flew in from California this afternoon
on somewhat short notice…“ She hesitated and then shrugged. „My name is Selena Caldwell.“
„Don’t worry, Selena. The shops here can supply you with anything you need tomorrow. What you need
at the moment, however, is probably a hot toddy. Can I buy you one in the bar?“ Ty waited hopefully.
She considered the offer. Ty Loren moved fast Then again, what harm would mere be in accepting a
drink? A little easy company might be just the thing to take her mind off her problems. First things first,
however. She flashed a brilliant smile.
„Only if you’ll swear on your old Boy Scout honor that you are not now married, separated, engaged, or
otherwise committed!“
Ty blinked in surprise and then grinned. „Cautious soul, aren’t you? Never mind, you have my word I’m
a free man. Can I get the same assurance from you?“ he added a little carefully.
„You most certainly can,“ she told him in a heartfelt voice. „I’m a free woman.“
With a pleased look, Ty took her arm and led her into the plush bar where another hearth promised
further comfort. The feeling came back into Selena’s chilled feet as she sank into one of the heavily
upholstered chairs at a small round table.
„Here for a long visit?“ Ty demanded after ordering the hot toddies.
„A couple of weeks, unless I freeze to death first. What about you?“
„Another few days and then it’s back to the salt mines in San Francisco. I’m with a law firm there,“ he
murmured, establishing his status with a suitably casual style. San Francisco lawyers vacationing at
sophisticated ski resorts were bound to be accepted anywhere and he knew it.
Selena relaxed as the warmth of the room took hold and the hot toddy arrived. „This really isn’t so bad,“
she told her newfound acquaintance consideringly, sipping at the drink as she eyed the darkening ski slopes
outside the insulated windows. „As long as you’re indoors, that is!“
„Ever ski before?“
„Nope. And I don’t intend to start. I’m just here because some friends decided at the last minute that
they wouldn’t be able to use their condo this year.“
The conversation was quickly becoming the friendly, casual kind and Selena didn’t fight it Where was
the harm? Ty seemed pleasant company, and although she had no intention of actively encouraging him
beyond the present level of association, Selena found herself willing to spend the evening with him. His
cheerful, intelligent conversation was successfully taking her mind off the disturbing fury and dismay that
still ran like a deep current beneath the surface of her thoughts. Being with him was rather like going out to
an entertaining film when one was in need of diversion.
Wondering how Ty would feel if he could overhear her mental description of his usefulness brought a
quirking curve to Selena’s mouth as she lifted her thick glass mug once more.
As she did so she let her amused gaze idly sweep the room full of boisterous people who had spent the
day on the slopes or were actively engaged in giving a good imitation of having done so. Here and there a
white plaster cast caught the eye but even those unlucky skiers seemed quite cheerful. Where had she read
that the broken bones of skiers tended to heal more quickly than similar injuries incurred in other ways?
Nothing like a positive attitude, Selena reminded herself bracingly.
Her wandering gaze found the entrance to the lounge as that last thought crossed her mind. And
became suddenly riveted. She nearly choked on her hot toddy as she took in the sight of the tall, dark shape
in the doorway.
He couldn’t have followed her here to Utah! Why on earth would York Sutherland do such a thing?
She was, after all, of no further use to the man. Hadn’t he won the battle in which she’d unwittingly
become a pawn?
The mug in her hand came down on the tabletop with a jarring
